Georgetown Basketball: Four-star PG Tremont Waters commits to Hoyas
John Thompson III and Georgetown basketball add their first recruit in the class of 2017.
The Big East continues to roll on the recruiting trail. Xavier has a top-10 recruiting class in 2017. Villanova is reeling in high level recruits like Jermaine Samuels after their National Championship. And even schools like Butler, Creighton, Marquette, St. John’s and Providence are having resounding success.
Georgetown got in on the fun on Wednesday, as they landed their first recruit in the class of 2017. Four-star point guard Tremont Waters verbally committed to the Hoyas over the Indiana Hoosiers and Kentucky Wildcats.

The 5’11”, 165 pound West Haven, CT native is one of the top point guards in the class of 2017 (labeled as 7th best, according to ESPN) and is ranked 32nd in ESPN’s top 100. The Notre Dame High School prospect had offers from a plethora of high major schools, including UConn, Duke and Kansas, in addition to Georgetown, Kentucky and Indiana.
Waters is undersized and needs to add strength, but he has elite level quickness and speed, is always in attack mode and he can score from all three levels on the floor. The Connecticut native is also a fantastic distributor, as he makes the proper decisions when penetrating the defense.
Even though he could improve his consistency from beyond the arc, Waters has good range and has the feistiness to pick up point guards in a front court press defensively.
This is an outstanding start to Georgetown’s class of 2017. Other highly touted recruits will want to play with an a point guard like Waters. The Hoyas remain in the mix for five-star small forward Troy Brown Jr., who is also being courted by Oregon, Ohio State and others, four-star shooting guard David Beatty and three-star power forward Andre Rafus.
With Tre Campbell, L.J. Peak and Jonathan Mulmore heading into their senior seasons in 2017-18, the Hoyas needed reinforcements for the next few seasons. The future of Georgetown’s backcourt will likely be in the hands of Waters and 2016 four-star shooting guard Jagan Mosley.
Waters is the perfect addition for the Hoyas. He’s a reliable point guard with terrific upside. He won’t be a one-and-done caliber player, but instead, will bring excitement and dynamic play to John Thompson III’s team for year’s to come. The Hoyas are trying to keep pace with the rest of the Big East and Waters’ presence in D.C. will only help.
