Derwin Kitchen and Bernard James each had double-doubles as Florida State overcame 26 turnovers and snapped a two-game losing streak with a 60-38 victory over cold-shooting Hartford 60-38 Sunday night.
The 6-10 James had 11 points and 10 rebounds while Kitchen, a 6-3 guard, collected his first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
But it wasn't easy at the start.
Florida State (6-2) took the lead at 28-27 on Michael Snaer's 3-point basket from the corner with just over a minute to go in the first half. Ian Miller's 3-point shot capped a 31-9 run that put the Seminoles in firm control at 48-33 with 8:05 left in the game.
Hartford (2-6) scored just nine points in the second half, the fewest ever scored on the Seminoles homecourt in the last 30 years.
The Hawks shot only an almost unimaginable 8.8 percent in the second half on 3-of-34 shooting and finished the game at 21.5 percent. The Hawks went 1-for-22 from 3-point distance in the second half. They made 40 percent in the first half, including 7 of 16 from 3-point range.
Joe Zeglinski led Hartford with nine points, all in the first half.
Hartford grabbed an early 19-10 lead midway through the first half on Anthony Minor's layup and still led 24-17 with 6:54 left. The Hawks scored only 14 points in the final 26:54 of the game and just nine in the second half.
Okaro White's dunk on a lob pass got Florida State its first double-digit lead at 41-31 midway through the second half.
Florida State, which averaged only 47.5 points in losses last week to Florida and Ohio State, struggled again offensively. The Seminoles shot just 29.2 percent in the first half when they committed 17 of their 26 turnovers.
Chris Singleton continued to have difficulty, committing nine turnovers and scoring just seven points.
