FIU outlasts FAU, 64-56

MIAMI (AP) Dennis Mavin scored 18 points and had nine rebounds and six assists to lead Florida International to a 64-56 victory over Florida Atlantic on Tuesday night.

Adrian Diaz added 13 points and seven boards while Dominique Williams had 12 points for FIU (11-10, 4-4 Conference USA), which improved to 7-0 this season against fellow schools from the state of Florida.

FIU held FAU to 31.8 percent shooting from the field, 11 percentage points below its season average, including 5 of 23 from 3-point range.

The Golden Panthers opened on a 19-8 run and held a commanding 20-point lead at halftime. They pushed their lead to as many as 24 before the Owls made a late charge, but could not cut the lead below double figures until two Javier Lacunza free throws with eight seconds left.

Justin Massey led FAU (8-11, 1-7) with 16 points, and Justin Raffington added 14 points and 10 rebounds.
