Ex-Seton Hall player gets 3-year term for robbery
A former Seton Hall basketball player has been sentenced to three years in prison for his role in an armed robbery at a house near the school's northern New Jersey campus.
Kelly Whitney pleaded guilty in August to burglary, conspiracy and criminal restraint charges as part of a plea bargain with Essex County prosecutors. The plea came nearly three months after Whitney's trial ended with a deadlocked jury.
The Star-Ledger of Newark (http://bit.ly/sdsYL3) reports Whitney will be eligible for parole in October. He played for Seton Hall from 2002-2006.
Whitney and another former Seton Hall player, Robert Mitchell, admitted robbing several students in an off-campus apartment in March 2010.
Mitchell - who pleaded guilty and testified against Whitney - also was due to be sentenced Monday. But that was postponed until Dec. 19.
