Evans scores 24, helps Rice hold off Montana State, 83-78

HOUSTON (AP) Marcus Evans scored on a layup and knocked down 3 of 4 from the free throw line, all in the final minute, as Rice held off Montana State 83-78 on Monday night.

Tyler Hall drilled a 3-pointer with 1:14 left in the game to get the Bobcats within two, 77-75, but Evans answered with a layup to make it 79-75. With 20 seconds left Evans drew a foul from Quinton Everett and Montana State was whistled for a technical foul. Evans missed the first free throw and hit the next three in a row to make it 81-75.

Evans was 6 of 10 from the field, including 4 of 6 from beyond the arc, and was 8 of 12 from the line to finish with 24 points for the Owls (3-1).

Hall finished with 28 points to lead Montana State (3-2), hitting on 6 of 12 from beyond the arc.
