Mike Smith had 20 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, leading East Tennessee State to a 79-51 victory over former Southern Conference rival Appalachian State on Friday at the Cancun Governor's Cup.

The Buccaneers (5-7) ran off 16 straight points to build a big first-half lead and were never seriously challenged again. Isiah Brown scored 16 points, Adam Sollazzo had 14 points and Micha Willams added 13 for ETSU, which shot 57 percent from the field and held Appalachian State to 31.5 percent shooting (17 for 54).

Appalachian State (4-7) jumped out to a 5-0 lead before coach Murry Bartow called a timeout. ETSU responded with the 16-0 run.

Nathan Healy scored 14 points and had a team-high seven rebounds and Omar Carter had 16 points for Appalachian State.
