Antoine Young scored 21 points, tying a season high, to lead Creighton past Illinois State 64-53 on Wednesday night in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams.
The Bluejays (9-4) used an 11-0 run late in the first half to build a 38-29 lead at the break. The Redbirds (8-4) later had an 8-0 run to get within 46-42 with 11:54 to go, but Creighton ran off nine of the next 11 points and maintained the lead after that.
Young made 8 of his 13 shots as Creighton shot 50 percent from the floor. It was the Bluejays' first win at Illinois State since 2005.
Gregory Echenique had 14 points and seven rebounds for Creighton. Anthony Cousin led Illinois State with 12 points.
