Bethune-Cookman sneaks by Jacksonville, 52-47
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) Clemmye Owens scored 19 points on 5 of 11 shooting to lead Bethune-Cookman to a 52-47 win against Jacksonville on Saturday evening.
Both teams had poor shooting games, neither reached 40 percent from the field and combined to go just 9 of 36 from 3-point range. However Bethune-Cookman hit 10 more free throws than Jacksonville, and got to the line 12 more times overall.
Ricky Johnson added 12 points and six rebounds for the Wildcats (2-6), and Mikel Trapp finished with 10.
Kori Babineaux had 17 points for Jacksonville (2-7), while Marcel White contributed 10 off the bench.
Bethune-Cookman held a 35-21 lead at the break, on the strength of a 14-5 stretch to open the game. Jacksonville would storm back in the second half however, cutting the lead to three with 1:03 left. Four Johnson free throws would put the game away for the Wildcats.
