Baylor freshman Perry Jones III has been declared ineligible for a pre-enrollment amateurism violation/preferential treatment involving three, 15-day loans between his mother and an AAU coach provided while the talented forward was in high school.
The school announced the decision just prior to the team’s game against Oklahoma on Wednesday in the Big 12 tournament.
Baylor was informed of the decision earlier in the afternoon and has immediately appeared to have his eligibility reinstated.
The school said that the loans were repaid in a timely manner, according to interviews conducted by Baylor officials and the NCAA staff.
"We are profoundly disappointed in the timing and determination in this matter," said Baylor Director of Athletics Ian McCaw.
"This outcome appears to be inconsistent with other recent, widely-discussed NCAA decisions."
Jones' AAU coach also paid for Jones’ travel to a professional preseason football game in San Diego.
Jones was averaging 13.9 points and earned second team All-Big 12 honors.
Baylor is considered an NCAA tournament bubble team that needs to win a couple games in the Big 12 tournament to get into the Big Dance.
