Basketball broadcasts at Temple have an international flavor
PHILADELPHIA (AP) Amid the raucous cheering for Temple University's basketball team, two new voices have joined the crowd - and they're speaking Mandarin.
Chinese students James Yuan and Javi (JAY-vee) Yuan are broadcasting home games in their native language. The live audio stream can be heard on Temple's sports website.
The students, who are not related, beat out 18 other hopefuls in a campus contest. They say basketball is one way to bridge the cultural gap with their American peers.
Temple is one of many U.S. colleges that has seen major growth in enrollment by Chinese students. The Philadelphia university also has partnerships with several Chinese schools.
Chinese students at the University of Illinois and University of Dayton have also been broadcasting sports in Mandarin.
