Arizona's Smith tears ACL for a third time

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 4:27 p.m. ET

Arizona forward Ray Smith will sit out a third straight season after tearing his right ACL for the second time in a year.

Smith was injured in the No. 10 Wildcats' exhibition game against College of Idaho on Tuesday night, his first game since tearing both of his ACLs over the previous two seasons.

Smith was able to return after being injured twice in the game, but had to be helped off the court after going down a third time in the second half.

A key member of coach Sean Miller's highly touted recruiting class a year ago, he did not play last season after tearing his right ACL. Smith tore his left ACL as a high school senior.
