Omar Carter scored 35 points to lead Appalachian State to an 89-86 victory over Tulsa on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Carter redshirted a year ago after transferring from Charleston Southern, where he was the 2008 Big South Freshman of the Year and averaged 13.3 points per game as a sophomore. He's joined in the backcourt by senior Donald Sims, the returning Southern Conference Player of the Year, who added 18 points. Andre Williamson and Petey Hausley added 10 points each.

Scottie Haralson, a transfer from Connecticut playing his first game for Tulsa, scored 26 in his TU debut, making five 3-pointers. Tulsa center Stephen Idlet, hampered by foul problems, had 20 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes. Returning all-conference guard Justin Hurtt added 15.

Carter led a decisive 16-2 run that turned a 58-56 deficit into a 72-60 lead with 3:23 to play.
