AP source: Canisius hires Witherspoon as basketball coach

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press that Canisius College has hired Alabama assistant Reggie Witherspoon as its basketball coach. A news conference is scheduled for Tuesday.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity Saturday because the school has not announced the hiring.

Witherspoon replaces Jim Baron, who retired May 20.

This is a homecoming for Witherspoon, who is from Buffalo and spent more than 13 seasons coaching the University at Buffalo. He was fired after the 2012-13 season. He has spent the past three seasons at Alabama.

The Golden Griffins play in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
