Nikola Cvetinovic hit a layup with 19 seconds left to break a tie and lift Akron to a 54-52 victory over Illinois-Chicago on Saturday.
Cvetinovic finished with 19 points to lead the Zips (4-2) while Brett McClanahan added 10.
The Flames (4-5) were up by as many as 13 points early in the second half, but Akron hammered away during the period with 44.8 percent shooting.
McClanahan tied it at 52-all on a 3-pointer with about a minute left in the game. Akron got the ball back again when Steve McNees stole it from UIC's Robo Kreps about 10 seconds later.
