About time! Bird finally gets a statue at Indiana State

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 6:53 p.m. ET

As if Larry Bird weren't intimidating enough on a basketball court, now a 15-foot version of him will remind Indiana State visitors how scary he could be.

The Sycamores haven’t had much basketball success since Bird strolled the campus and took them to the NCAA title game in 1979, but the school is making sure to honor Bird properly with its 1,900-pound statue. Sculptor Bill Wolfe was on hand this week as the figure was raised, with Wolfe shifting the positioning to make sure Bird'€™s shot lined up perfectly with a local intersection, according to The Indianapolis Star.

The statue notably was made to be taller than Michigan State’s statue of Magic Johnson, Bird’s rival.
