2017 Five-Star Shooting Guard Commits to Duke
Duke Basketball received it’s second commit from the 2017 recruiting class and will add talented shooting guard Gary Trent, Jr.
Blue Devil recruiting target Gary Trent, Jr. announced last week that he might make his college decision during the NCAA early signing period, and yesterday the 5-star shooting guard announced he will be joining Duke Basketball next season!
Duke will add a very talented and athletic shooting guard in Gary Trent, Jr. He’s a 6-5, 200 pound guard who is a versatile scorer and hard-nosed defender. Trent starred at Prolific Prep in California and excelled with USA Basketball, winning a gold medal as the leading scorer for the U16 team, and in the AAU basketball circuit. He has a high basketball IQ and sound fundamentals, and high skills as the son of a former NBA player Gary Trent.
Trent explained why he decided to select Duke in a recent blog post after announcing his decision on ESPN. The opportunity to play for Coach K and the Duke brand was the main reason he chose to join the Blue Devils. The future Duke guard also notes that he will be trying to recruit five-star big men Wendell Carter, who’s considering Duke, and Kevin Knox and convince them to also join him and 4-star shooting guard Alex O’Connell next year.
Duke will need to add depth at guard next season, with Matt Jones and Grayson Allen expected to graduate this year, and Trent will add a talented option to replace them. The Blue Devils are in the running for several of the top-ranked big men in the 2017 class and still looking for a point guard to add in the next recruiting class.
