Seniesa Estrada wants to stay busy, and continue to break barriers
Seniesa Estrada (7-0) knew from the first time she watched boxing on television as a small child that she could and would learn to fight. After training with her father Joe Estrada, the Californian developed into an impressive amateur and eventually turned pro in 2011.
Last month, on June 3, the undefeated flyweight made a bit of history, when she and Christina Fuentes became the first women to be featured on a Golden Boy Promotions card. "It meant a lot to fight on a Golden Boy card because they ordinarily just don't promote women, but they put faith in us," she tells FOXSports.
A lot of additional media attention, pressure and distractions came with being on the televised bill out of Los Angeles, near her home, but Estrada focused and looked at home under the bright lights. "My team and management take care of things so I get to focus on just fighting," she continued.
"There was definitely a lot more things to handle surrounding the fight this time, but this is what I've always wanted."
Estrada took to the Golden Boy ring with her hair dyed golden and braided and then proceeded to implement her quick and speedy style for six rounds, earning a unanimous decision over Fuentes. Now, the rising star looks to build on her momentum and return to the cage in the fall.
There isn't much rest time for "Super Bad", these days, but after a some years where securing fights was difficult and getting promoters to believe in her was even more so, she does not mind. If things continue to go well, the 24 year-old a chance at becoming the new face of women's boxing.
"It's a lot, sometimes, and I definitely took a few days off after the last fight, but I love training and I love getting these new opportunities," she insists.
"I'm so happy to be doing what I love, what I wanted to do since I was a little kid."
