Preview: Kell Brook vs. GGG
Kazakhstan’s Gennady Golovkin (L) and Britain’s Kell Brook face each other after the weigh-in for their middleweight fight in London, on September 9, 2016.
Brook, the reigning IBF welterweight champion from Sheffield with an unblemished record, is stepping up two weight divisions and Golovkin considers him his toughest test yet. In tonight’s big fight across the pond, Gennady Golovkin will prove to be too much for Kell Brook, both in size and experience. GGG is the reigning middleweight (160lbs) champion of the world, while Brook holds the IBF welterweight (147lbs) title. While Brook is a big welterweight, I still think that he’s too small for a fierce middleweight like GGG who’s been steam rolling his opponents, compiling an impressive record of 35-0 (32KOs). In his last 22 fights, no one made it to hear the final bell. I am not taking away anything from Brook. He has good boxing ability, tons of heart and good power. Brook has managed to complied a record of 36-0 (25KOs), even dethroning the former IBF welterweight champ Shawn Porter. However, Porter is no GGG. GGG was a star amateur and the 2004 Olympic silver medalist for his native Ukraine and has over 300 amateur fights. That coupled with the fact that he’s a MIDDLEWEIGHT will prove to be too much for Kell Brook. I do feel that Brook will make it an interesting fight though, but for how long?
You can catch the two-fight card starting at 5:30 ET tonight on HBO.
