ANNOUNCER: Borussia Monchengladbach and Hertha were trying to retain their slim chances of European qualification. Former Berlin forward Raffael scored twice today, 4-2 win against them earlier in the season, and started again for this one. Both sides are struggling for goals at the moment, though. It took 17 minutes for the first real chance to arise, when Davie Selke worked well with Vladimir Darida.

Gladbach and Hertha had played out goalless draws in their previous fixtures, and it looked like we might be on for another. But four minutes before the break, Hertha broke through. Salomon Kalou pounced after Selke had taken down Niklas Stark's pass beautifully. A decisive touch from Jannick Vestergaard, too.

An uninspired first half for Borussia Monchengladbach, so they turned to Thorgan Hazard at the break. Left on the bench for the first time this season, he had an immediate impact. 10 minutes after the restart, he found space to supply Patrick Herrmann. Gladbach thought they had their equalizer, although VAR was used to disallow the goal for offside in the build-up, ironically against Hazard.

There were gaps for Hertha to exploit, but having failed to score in five of their previous six games, perhaps it wasn't surprising they missed a host of chances, the best falling to Kalou. Berlin were made to rue these missed opportunities. With roughly a quarter of an hour to go, Hazard met Herrmann's cross flicked into his path for a first Bundesliga goal since January, this a timely reminder as to why he's impossible to leave out.

Shortly after, further drama. Nico Elvedi was chopped down by Fabian Lustenberger in the box. Not given initially, but Bibiana Steinhaus overturned the decision after having a look herself. Hazard stepped forward, and with ease he scored his ninth of the season in the Bundesliga. This turnaround means that Gladbach's European hopes haven't ended yet. But for Hertha Berlin, this is their eighth defeat in nine games against Borussia.
