Tough night in final exhibition contest
Davis didn't receive a touch on offense but gained 11 yards on two punt returns while losing a fumble in Thursday's 28-27 preseason win over the Steelers.
Impact
His muffed punt return at the Buffalo 12-yard line in the first quarter led directly to Pittsburgh's first TD of the game on the very next play. It was a tough way for Davis to end his preseason, but the third-year RB has never returned a punt in his NFL career, and that's unlikely to be his role in the regular season. Davis' spot as the No. 2 back behind James Cook seems fairly secure however, after he averaged 4.7 yards on 58 carries over 17 regular-season games last year.

Scores in second preseason game
Davis rushed seven times for 21 yards and a touchdown while adding a 10-yard catch on his lone target in Saturday's 31-7 preseason win over the Browns.
Impact
Davis got the start at running back with James Cook resting. The 2024 fourth-round pick capped Buffalo's opening drive with a one-yard touchdown run and stayed in for the team's second possession. Cook will continue to lead Buffalo's backfield in the regular season as long as he's healthy, but Davis would be a must-roster fantasy option running behind Buffalo's elite offensive line if Cook gets hurt.

Seven touches in preseason opener
Davis carried the ball three times for 21 yards and caught all four of his targets for 32 yards in Saturday's 29-14 preseason win over the Panthers.
Impact
James Cook got the start in the backfield during the Bills' preseason opener and played the whole first quarter, but Davis was the next RB into the game and had a very productive day. Davis' numbers as a pass-catcher were surprising considering that the third-year back has just 27 career catches in 34 regular-season contests, but new offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael has suggested that Cook could see more usage as a receiver in 2026, and Davis might benefit from that wrinkle in the scheme as well when he's on the field.

Returns after brief exit
Davis was able to check back into Tuesday's practice after briefly exiting with an apparent ankle injury, Matt Parrino of The Syracuse Post-Standard reports.
Impact
Davis was slow to get up after getting tackled to the ground on a run during 11-on-11 drills, with team trainers coming out on the field to evaluate him before he was able to walk to the sideline under his own power. After a quick trip to the medical tent, Davis was back on the field, albeit with a taped-up ankle. His availability doesn't look like it will be much of a concern moving forward.

Continues to work behind Cook
As training camp approaches, Davis is on track to maintain his complementary role in a Buffalo backfield that returns starter James Cook as well as Ty Johnson, Matt Parrino of Syr...
Impact
During the 2025 regular season, Cook logged 309 carries (third in the NFL) for a league-high 1,621 rushing yards in 17 contests, a heavy workload that didn't leave much volume for either Davis (58 carries) or Ty Johnson (50 carries). With Cook entrenched as the Bills' lead back, Davis brings modest fantasy lineup utility out of the gate in 2026, but he remains a valuable backup who excels as a kicker returner, and if Cook were to miss time down the road, Davis -- who racked up 151 rushing yards on 21 carries during a spot start in Week 18 last season -- would likely step in as the starter, with Johnson also in the mix, in particular in pass-catching situations.

Pair of grabs in loss to Denver
Davis secured both of his targets for 33 yards during Buffalo's 33-30 divisional-round overtime loss to the Broncos on Saturday.
Impact
Davis also recorded five kickoff returns for 130 yards versus Denver. The 2024 fourth-round pick earned first-team All-Pro honors as a kick returner in his sophomore season, but he took a step backward on offense, working behind both James Cook and Ty Johnson out of the backfield during the 2025 campaign. Across 17 regular-season appearances, Davis rushed 58 times for 275 yards and zero scores while also securing 10 of 13 targets for 86 yards. Of those totals, 151 of Davis' rushing yards came in a meaningless Week 18 win over the Jets in which Cook didn't touch the ball after Buffalo's second offensive snap. Cook, Johnson and Davis all remain under contract with the Bills for 2026.

Special-teams impact in win
Davis recorded four kickoff returns for 119 yards and lost a fumble in Sunday's 27-24 wild-card win over the Jaguars.
Impact
Davis didn't garner any touches on offense as James Cook handled the entirety of the backfield work versus Jacksonville. Davis did return four kicks, the first of which he put on the ground, and it was recovered by the Jaguars. The running back will look to be more involved in the Bills' offensive attack in the AFC divisional round.
