Impact Whittington was unable to play in last Friday's preseason finale against the Panthers due to an ankle injury. The running back's persistent issue, which is now resolved, hindered him from being able to compete for a depth role enough that he will be unable to make the 53-man roster. If the 24-year-old can clear waivers, he is set to return to the Texans on the practice squad.

Impact With David Montgomery and Woody Marks locked into the first two depth chart spots in Houston's backfield, Whittington is competing with Jawhar Jordan, who is nursing a hip injury, for the third-string spot. Whittington recorded 22 carries for 51 yards during preseason action before suffering the ankle injury, while Jordan hasn't been able to get on the field for any exhibition games. Whittington signed with Houston as an undrafted free agent in May after finishing with 829 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 129 carries at Oregon last season.

The running back played four seasons for the Ducks, capping his college years off with 129 carries for 829 yards and six touchdowns over 13 games in 2025. He also added 19 receptions for 98 yards and one touchdown through the air. Despite a smaller frame, Whittington could provide solid value to the Texans as a rotational back that likely won't lose the ball (one fumble in four seasons with Oregon).
