Cardinals need leaders who can create identity, develop Kyler Murray

Arizona needs an aligned GM/coach tandem, with priority No. 1 being to get the best out of QB Kyler Murray when he's healthy again.
JANUARY 10
Cardinals need leaders who can create identity, develop Kyler Murray
Quiet in season finale Brown had one reception on four targets for seven yards in Sunday's 38-13 loss to the 49ers.
Impact Brown failed to take advantage of an elevated role sans DeAndre Hopkins (knee), turning in his worst fantasy performance in the final game of the regular season. The 25-year-old got off to a hot start with his new club in 2022, but injuries derailed both his and quarterback Kyler Murray's (knee) seasons. Brown finishes the campaign with a receiving line of 67-709-3 over 12 games played while catching balls from four different quarterbacks. Arizona already extended Brown's option through 2023, so Hollywood's fantasy value next season will be tied to the health and availability of his star quarterback.

Six catches in loss Brown recorded six catches on nine targets for 61 yards in Sunday's 20-19 loss to the Falcons.
Impact Brown didn't see an uptick in opportunity in the absence of DeAndre Hopkins (knee), though he did command at least eight targets for the fourth time in his last five games. Brown was overshadowed by Trey McBride, but he still managed lengthy receptions of 19 and 17 yards. That helped him surpass 60 receiving yards in a game for the first time since Week 6.
JANUARY 1 • ROTOWIRE
Solid yardage total in OT loss Brown secured three of six targets for 57 yards and rushed once for one yard in the Cardinals' 19-16 overtime loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday night.
Impact Brown checked in with the second-highest yardage total on the night through the air for the Cardinals while working with first-time starter Trace McSorley, a development that seemed to cap the speedster's overall numbers more than the groin issue he'd dealt with during the practice week. Most of Brown's production came on an impressive contested 47-yard catch late in the third quarter that set up a field goal, helping him to his best yardage tally since he recorded 68 against the Seahawks back in Week 6. Brown will work with either McSorley or Colt McCoy (concussion) again in a Week 17 road matchup versus the Falcons, which could somewhat dull an otherwise very favorable matchup.

Gets Week 16 questionable tag The Cardinals list Brown (groin) as questionable for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Brown was a mid-week addition to the Cardinals' injury report after he logged a limited practice Thursday before having his reps capped again Friday on account of the groin issue. The receiver's ability to practice in any fashion to close out Week 16 prep is a good sign, but an official word on his status for Sunday's game likely won't arrive until Arizona releases its inactive list 90 minutes prior to the 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff. If Brown suits up, he'll be on the receiving end of passes from third-string quarterback Trace McSorley, who is picking up his first NFL start with Kyler Murray (knee) on injured reserve and with Colt McCoy (concussion) ruled out for the Week 16 game.

Dealing with groin issue Brown (groin) was a limited practice participant Thursday, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Brown is a mid-week addition to the Cardinals' injury report, as he's now tending to a groin issue. After spending Weeks 7 through 11 on IR due to a foot injury, he's dealt with health concerns in back-to-back weeks, with an illness impacting his on-field work during Week 15 prep. Brown still was able to suit up this past Sunday at Denver and log a typical 92 percent share of snaps en route to four catches (on eight targets) for 19 yards. In the end, Friday's report will reveal whether or not he goes into the weekend with a designation for Sunday's contest against the Buccaneers.

Struggles in loss Brown recorded four receptions on eight targets for 19 yards in Sunday's 24-15 loss to the Broncos.
Impact Brown finished second on the team with eight targets, but that was the most noteworthy part of his performance. His longest reception went for only nine yards, and he managed only one reception for three yards across the final two quarters of the game. While Brown was likely hampered by playing with Arizona's second and third-string quarterbacks, he was outgained by three Arizona pass catchers. In three contests since returning from injured reserve, Brown now has 119 total yards and has yet to surpass 50 yards in a single game.

Suiting up in Week 15 Brown (illness) is active for Sunday's game at Denver, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.
Impact After an illness sidelined Brown from Thursday's practice, he returned as a limited participant Friday and went into the weekend with a questionable designation. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported late Saturday that Brown was in line to suit up Week 15, which has come to fruition. Brown will be on the receiving end of passes from Colt McCoy for the rest of the campaign following Kyler Murray's season-ending ACL tear. With four games to go in the regular season, Brown has reeled in 53 of 80 targets for 565 yards and three touchdowns in eight appearances, despite a rotating cast of personnel in Arizona's offense.

WR Marquise Brown expected to play for Cardinals vs. Broncos Brown was officially questionable to play with an illness. He is expected to play against the Broncos Sunday afternoon.
DECEMBER 18, 2022 • USATODAY.COM
Likely available Sunday Brown (illness), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Broncos, is expected to play, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Impact After sitting out Thursday's practice with the illness, Brown returned to the field Friday as a limited participant. He appears to have made some progress since that time, though the Cardinals won't officially confirm that Brown will suit up until the team releases its inactive list 90 minutes prior to Sunday's 4:05 p.m. ET kickoff. Though Brown's chances of making an impact as a downfield threat could be limited with Colt McCoy taking over at quarterback following Kyler Murray's season-ending knee injury, Brown had already been seeing more work out of the slot since returning to action Week 12 after a five-game stint on injured reserve. While McCoy essentially played the entirety of this past Monday's loss to the Patriots, Brown drew eight targets and finished with four catches for 34 yards.

Listed as questionable Brown (illness) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game in Denver, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.
Impact Brown's return to a limited practice Friday puts him on track to avoid the inactive list approximately ahead of a 4:05 ET kickoff Sunday. While not much has gone right in Arizona this year, the Cards at least have a strong WR duo in Brown and DeAndre Hopkins to help out backup QB Colt McCoy. With top cornerback Patrick Surtain likely to shadow Hopkins for at least part of the game, Brown figures to run a lot of his routes lined up across from rookie Damarri Mathis and 31-year-old K'Waun Williams (both have been solid this year, but not on Surtain's level).
DECEMBER 16, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Returns from illness Brown (illness) returned to practice Friday, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Brown missed just one practice and likely will be fine for Sunday's game in Denver. The problems for him this week are a tough Broncos secondary and the presence of backup Colt McCoy under center for Arizona instead of Kyler Murray (ACL).
DECEMBER 16, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Comes down with illness Brown was a non-participant at Thursday's practice due to an illness, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.
Impact After avoiding the injury report entirely Wednesday, Brown made an appearance one day later. Illnesses can be fickle, with a variety of recovery timelines, so his status will be one to watch closely as the week goes on. If Brown enters the weekend with a designation for Sunday's game at Denver, a 4:05 p.m. ET kickoff allows for less players to pivot to if he ends up inactive.
DECEMBER 15, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Four grabs in Week 14 loss Brown secured four of eight targets for 34 yards in the Cardinals' 27-13 loss to the Patriots on Monday night.
Impact Brown's numbers were naturally affected by the fact Kyler Murray exited the game on the third play of the game with what appears to be a serious knee injury. The speedster's ideal route tree lends itself much better to Murray than veteran quarterback Colt McCoy, who tends to frequently operate in the short and mid-range areas of the field. Brown's catch and yardage totals were his lowest since Week 1, but he'll aim to bounce back irrespective of who's under center in a Week 15 road matchup against the Broncos.

Six catches in return Brown recorded six receptions on eight targets for 46 yards in Sunday's 25-24 loss to the Chargers.
Impact Brown returned to action for the first time since Week 6 and immediately led Arizona in targets and receptions. His yardage total was held in check as he worked in short areas of the field. That limited him to only 5.8 yards per target while his longest reception of the day went for 13 yards. The Cardinals will now head into their Week 13 bye, though Brown should be back at near full strength by the time the team takes on New England in Week 14.

Back on active roster The Cardinals activated Brown (foot) from injured reserve Saturday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
Impact With the anticipation over, the Cardinals finally will have the wide receiver duo of DeAndre Hopkins and Brown available in the same game for the first time this season Sunday against the Chargers. Coach Kliff Kingsbury has said that Brown likely will be on a "pitch count" of sorts in his first action since Week 6, according to Urban. Still, Brown's presence could mean for a more potent Arizona offense, as he put together a 43-485-3 line on 64 targets in the first six contests of the campaign.

On track to play Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury said Friday that he expects Brown (foot) to play Sunday against the Chargers, Tyler Drake of ArizonaSports.com reports.
Impact The Cardinals designated Brown for return from injured reserve last Wednesday and had him out on the practice field again this week. Kingsbury said Wednesday that the speedy wideout was likely to be on a pitch count in his first game back after missing more than a month with foot injury, but Brown at least sounds like he's on track to play for the first time since Week 6. The Cardinals will have until 4 p.m. ET on Saturday to officially activate Brown from IR for this weekend's game.

Impact The Cardinals designated Brown for return from IR last Wednesday, but he didn't do enough in practice to get back on the active roster for Monday's eventual loss to the 49ers. Now that he's taking part in drills for a second consecutive week, he may have a better shot to play Sunday, but if he's active he likely won't take on a full allotment of snaps. Arizona's receiving corps is banged up at the moment, with Rondale Moore (groin) expected to miss Week 12 and Greg Dortch (thumb) not taking part in Wednesday's walk-through session. As a result, Brown still could make waves working behind DeAndre Hopkins and potentially ahead of A.J. Green and Robbie Anderson if he's available and if Moore and Dortch aren't.
