Impact Mack suffered an Achilles injury that wiped out most of his 2020 season, and by the time he was healthy last season, the lead-back job in Indianapolis was in the capable hands of Jonathan Taylor. Mack played just six games and had 28 carries for 101 yards last season, but the five-year veteran gets a chance to show off his health as the perceived lead back for Houston, which is expected to run often in 2022. Along with Mack, Rex Burkhead and Dameon Pierce round out the top of the depth chart.

Impact Pierce reportedly is making a strong impression, but it seems like a wide-open competition, and Mack is the only one with experience working as an NFL lead back. That was years ago, of course, and he's taken only 28 regular-season carries since suffering an Achilles tear in Week 1 of 2020 with the Colts. Mack did run for 908 yards and nine touchdowns in 2018 (195 carries - 4.7 YPC), followed by 1,091 yards and eight TDs in 2019 (247 carries - 4.4 YPC).

Heading to Houston The Texans and Mack agreed to a contract Friday, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
Impact A fourth-round pick of the Colts in 2017, Mack worked his way to the top of the depth chart at running back in his second and third seasons, combining for 1,999 yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground between 2018 and 2019. Indianapolis then selected Jonathan Taylor in the second round of the 2020 Draft, which was followed by Mack tearing his Achilles in Week 1 of that campaign. Mack only appeared in six games last year, averaging 3.6 yards on his 28 carries, and otherwise was a healthy scratch after Week 8, a late-season bout on the reserve/COVID-19 list aside. In Houston, he'll vie for slotting in the backfield with Rex Burkhead, Royce Freeman and Dare Ogunbowale.

Impact The 25-year-old began the 2021 campaign as the Colts' No. 3 running back behind Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines, but he saw limited playing time early in the season. Mack and the Colts mutually agreed to seek a trade in late September, but a trade partner wasn't found. The 2017 fourth-rounder didn't appear in any of the final nine games of the season, mainly due to being a healthy scratch. Mack is slated to become an unrestricted free agent during the offseason, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him attempt to carve out a role elsewhere.
