Two catches in regular-season debut
Fields caught two of four targets for 25 yards during Sunday night's 28-20 victory over the Cowboys.
Impact
Fields was on the field for 50 of the team's 69 total offensive snaps in his regular-season debut, and he appears to be settling in as the Giants' No. 2 option at wide receiver behind Malik Nabers. The 23-year-old has a sizeable 6-foot-4 frame, and he could continue to garner more looks moving forward as he gets more comfortable at the NFL level.

Looks set to begin season as No. 2 wideout
Fields appears on track to open the season as the Giants' No. 2 receiver after the team released Darius Slayton on Monday, Matt Iegros of USA Today reports.
Impact
The longest-tenured player on the Giants roster, Slayton looked like the leading candidate to handle the perimeter role opposite No. 1 wideout Malik Nabers (knee), but those duties could end up falling to Fields, a third-round rookie out of Notre Dame. Listed at 6-foot-4 and 222 pounds, Fields showed impressive size-adjusted speed during pre-draft testing, and after drawing positive buzz in training camp and the preseason for his physicality and ability to make plays downfield, the Giants may have felt comfortable moving on from Slayton. The Giants still have veterans Darnell Mooney and Odell Beckham on hand to push for playing time in two- and three-wide sets, but Fields often took reps ahead of both players while Nabers was sidelined or limited to non-contact portions of practice for much of camp.

Could see expanded role with Austin out
Fields could be one of multiple Giants receivers that benefits from added opportunities to begin the season after Calvin Austin (knee) sustained a torn ACL during Tuesday's practic...
Impact
Listed at 6-foot-4 and 222 pounds, Fields is primarily an "X" receiver and projects to see most of his playing time on the perimeter as a rookie, but the loss of Austin -- who was projected to serve as the Giants' top slot man -- could nonetheless aid his chances of seeing the field. With Austin sidelined, Dan Duggan of The Athletic posits that the Giants will lean on a committee of players in the slot, which could include Malik Nabers (knee). While it's also not out of the question for Fields to see some occasional work as a power slot, the rookie third-round pick would still be a beneficiary of more snaps on the outside if Nabers ends up playing inside more frequently. Fields has drawn generally positive reviews during his first training camp, seeing plenty of reps with the first-team offense while filling in for Nabers, who had been a non-participant or limited participant for much of the summer before being cleared to take contact earlier this week.
