Why the 49ers are Suddenly Optimistic About Tight End Luke Farrell
San Francisco 49ers tight end Luke Farrell faces a big 2026. George Kittle and Kyle Shanahan are impressed with his training camp so far.

Finds end zone in fifth year
Farrell finished his first regular season with San Francisco grabbing 11 of 14 targets for 85 yards and two touchdowns across 17 games.
Impact
Farrell signed with the 49ers in 2025 to back up TE George Kittle after playing his first four seasons with the Jaguars. Kittle wound up missing six games during the regular season, but it was third-stringer Jake Tonges who took over the injured starter's targets in those contests while generating fantasy value off the waiver wire. Farrell did catch a pair of short touchdown passes after being held out of the end zone during his four years in Jacksonville, but the volume simply wasn't enough to register even in games that Kittle missed. With a hard cap on his playing time and target potential, fantasy managers can safely ignore Farrell in 2026 drafts.

No targets sans Kittle in Week 17
Farrell logged 27 snaps on offense (38 percent) and was not targeted in Sunday's 42-38 win over the Bears.
Impact
Starter George Kittle (ankle) was sidelined for Sunday Night Football in Week 17, but it was TE Jake Tonges (7-60-1) who got the spot-start and provided fantasy value in the primetime win. Farrell stuck in his usual blocking role as the backup, earning similar playing time to games in which Kittle was healthy for. The 27-year-old Farrell does not carry fantasy value heading into Saturday's regular-season finale against the Seahawks.

No receptions Sunday
Farrell was not target as a receiver in Sunday's 41-22 victory over Arizona.
Impact
Farrell was able to nab his second touchdown of the season against the Rams last week, but he reverted to his blocking role against the Cardinals on Sunday. The veteran backup logged 16 snaps on offense (29 percent) behind George Kittle's dominant 6-67-2 receiving line. Farrell's fantasy value is completely dependent on vulturing short touchdowns from Kittle, which keeps the former off the fantasy radar for Week 12.

Hits pay dirt in loss
Farrell had two receptions on as many targets for 15 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 42-26 loss to the Rams.
Impact
Farrell got back in the scoring column after recording the first touchdown of his career against the Saints in Week 2. The blocking tight end had just five receptions for 48 yards in the seven games in between his trips to the end zone. Farrell's minimal role on offense keeps him out of the fantasy conversation in standard formats.

Scores first TD of career
Farrell brought in two of three targets for 15 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 26-21 win over the Saints.
Impact
Farrell got the start in place of George Kittle (hamstring) on Sunday, finishing with 41 snaps played on offense (58 percent). Jake Tonges wound up playing more snaps (79 percent) while garnering more targets in the passing game, but it was Farrell who cashed in one of Mac Jones's three touchdown passes. It appears that the 49ers will deploy both tight ends in tandem while Kittle mends on the IR. In that scenario, neither option offers much fantasy upside heading into next Sunday's tilt against Arizona.

Impact
Farrell played more offensive snaps (44) than Tonges (28) after Kittle's early departure in Week 1. Nonetheless, he finished with just one catch for four yards on his only target, while Tonges brought in all three of his targets for 15 yards and a score. Farrell solidified himself as a blocking specialist with the Jaguars from 2021-24, in which span he totaled just 36 receptions despite suiting up for 66 regular-season games, so while he seems like the favorite to lead the 49ers tight end position in snaps as long as Kittle is sidelined, the majority of pass-catching work could go Tonges' way.

Catches on pass Sunday
Farrell brought in his only target for four yards in Sunday's 17-13 win over the Seahawks.
Impact
Starter George Kittle (hamstring) left the contest after scoring an early touchdown, opening up a chunk of playing time for the team's backup tight ends. Farrell finished with the most snaps played on offense (44), but it was third-stringer Jake Tonges (3-15-1) who absorbed Kittle's fantasy production despite logging 14 less snaps. It appears the 49ers view Farrell primarily as a blocking tight end regardless of where he sits on the depth chart. It is currently unclear how long Kittle will be sidelined for (if at all), but it appears that Tonges would be the fantasy benefactor if the former can't suit up against the Saints next Sunday.
