Big output in Week 9 Wallace co-led the Bills in tackles with seven and added a fumble recovery in Sunday's 9-6 loss to Jacksonville.

Impact The defense wasn't the problem in this one in the upset loss (though the coaching staff probably wasn't thrilled with a taunting penalty Wallace picked up in the fourth quarter), as the Bills and Wallace were on their game all afternoon, as has been the case for most of the season for the league's best scoring defense. Wallace is up to 31 tackles, seven passes defended, one interception and the fumble recovery on the season, not bad at all if your IDP format uses the cornerback position. Wallace should continue to be heavily involved given that he plays across from teammate Tre'Davious White, a star defender that many opponents try to avoid in their passing games.

Impact We still like Wallace to win this battle, as he has more experience than Jackson and is also healthier -- the latter continues to wear a no-contact jersey at practice due to a stinger. Even if Wallace is the starter come Week 1, Jackson has made this enough of a battle that it probably wouldn't take much for the coach to make a switch in roles.

Back in action Wallace was back at practice Wednesday after missing some time last week with a hip injury, Mark Gaughan of The Buffalo News reports.

Impact Wallace wasn't even one of the injured Bills mentioned as having to practice in a red jersey, so we assume he's well on his way to suiting up Week 1 against the Steelers. All indications are that he'll begin the season as a starting cornerback across from Tre'Davious White.

Impact Wallace is the incumbent, so the thought here is he'll get the job unless he gets highly outplayed by Jackson over the next two weeks. Failing that slight surprise, Wallace will enter the season as the starter and should serve as a decent candidate for meaningful IDP stats considering teams target White so infrequently. Of course, the fact that it's still a tight battle this late in camp suggests Wallace would also be on a short leash should he win the job.

Impact Wallace has been a capable starter over his three-year pro career, but like a comfortable pair of jeans, what the undrafted free agent from 2018 has brought to the team is sometimes taken for granted. While there was some thought the contending Bills would bring in a higher-profile free agent to start across from White, Jackson seems to be Wallace's only real threat to the job. And Wallace has him beat in terms of experience and track record, as Jackson only played five regular-season games during his 2020 rookie season. It's a job battle worth monitoring in IDP formats -- teams shy away from the superstar White so much that the other corner gets targeted often. Wallace put up 76 tackles in 2019 (16 games) and 48 in 12 regular-season games last season, while he has four interceptions and 17 passes defensed across those two regular seasons.
