GAME LOG

INJURIES

No catches Monday Smith (knee) saw zero targets during Monday's 20-17 loss against the Chiefs.
Impact Smith was active in Monday's game against the Chiefs despite missing practice Saturday with a knee injury, but failed to see any targets. The 24-year-old tight end played 18 offensive snaps (30 percent) while Kyle Rudolph and Evan Engram took over a greater share of the workload. Although Smith figures to remain as the team's No. 3 tight end, the Giants have been heavily rumored to trade Engram during Tuesday's trade deadline which could afford Smith more playing time. If nothing else, a banged-up Giants wideout group might force Smith to at least play a handful more snaps, even just as a blocker.

Available Monday Smith (knee) is active for Monday's game against Kansas City, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Impact Smith received the questionable tag after sitting out Saturday's practice, but he apparently improved enough over the last two days to suit up Monday. He should serve as New York's No. 3 tight end behind Evan Engram and Kyle Rudolph.

Doesn't practice Saturday Smith (knee) is questionable for Monday's game against Kansas City, Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports.
Impact Smith put in limited practices Thursday and Friday before sitting out Saturday. He hasn't had much of a role in the passing game to this point, seeing just three targets all season and none since Week 3.
OCTOBER 30, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Limited at practice Thursday Smith (knee) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice session.
Impact Smith played through a knee injury in Sunday's win over Carolina, but he's still dealing with the injury ahead of Monday's Week 8 matchup against Kansas City. Even if he's able to suit up against the Chiefs, he's unlikely to have a significant role in the passing game.
OCTOBER 28, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Clears injury report Friday Smith (knee) has cleared the injury report ahead of Sunday's contest against the Panthers, Zack Rosenblatt of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Impact As expected, Smith will once again play through the knee injury that he has dealt with all season. The 24-year-old is firmly supplanted behind Evan Engram and Kyle Rudolph on the depth chart and has played a minimal role for the Giants offense this year, catching three passes for 33 yards across six games.
OCTOBER 22, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Limited again Thursday Smith (knee) was able to practice in a limited capacity Thursday, Zack Rosenblatt of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Impact The tight end logged a limited practice for the second consecutive day, which bodes well for his chances to play Sunday versus the Panthers. He has been on the injury report since Week 4, but he hasn't missed a game. Smith sits behind Evan Engram and Kyle Rudolph on the depth chart, which has resulted in him recording three catches for 33 yards in six games this season.
OCTOBER 21, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Gets in limited work Smith (knee) logged a limited practice Wednesday, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Impact Smith has been on the injury report with the knee issue since Week 4, though he has managed to suit up for each game. Presumably, that will continue for a Week 7 matchup against Carolina after he got in a limited practice Wednesday. Smith has recorded three receptions for 33 yards to this point in the campaign.
OCTOBER 21, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Will be active Sunday Smith (knee) is not listed on the Giants' injury report ahead of Sunday's matchup with the Cowboys, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Smith has played through the knee injury all season, so it's not surprising to see him active for Week 5. The 24-year-old will likely maintain his marginal role behind Evan Engram and Kyle Rudolph against the Cowboys on Sunday.
OCTOBER 8, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Limited at practice Smith (knee) was a limited participant at Thursday's practice, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Impact The tight end missed Wednesday's practice with a knee injury, but was able to practice in a limited fashion Thursday. He is considered questionable for Sunday's matchup against the Cowboys and Friday's injury report will provide a greater indication of his availability.
OCTOBER 7, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Held out of practice Wednesday Smith (knee) didn't practice Wednesday, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Smith has battled the knee injury all season, but he has been active for all four games. While he will likely be active for the divisional matchup with the Cowboys on Sunday, the 24-year-old will maintain his marginal role behind Evan Engram and Kyle Rudolph.
OCTOBER 6, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Will play against New Orleans Smith (knee) is active for Sunday's contest against the Saints, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official website reports.
Impact Smith has been listed on the Giants' injury report with a knee issue ahead of every game this season, but he has yet to sit out. The 24-year-old tight end has caught all three of his targets for 33 yards this year. He will likely continue to play a marginal role behind Evan Engram and Kyle Rudolph during Week 4.
OCTOBER 3, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Knee puts status in doubt again Smith (knee) is questionable for Sunday's game in New Orleans, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
Impact Smith has battled this knee issue all season but has yet to miss a game, so he'll likely gut it out again come Sunday. With Evan Engram having returned from a calf injury last week, Smith has been relegated to third-string tight end duties behind Engram and Kyle Rudolph.
OCTOBER 1, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Limited at practice Wednesday Smith (knee) was limited during Wednesday's practice, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.
Impact Smith has been listed on the Giants' injury report with a knee issue every week this season, but the 24-year-old tight end has played in every game. He has caught all three of his targets for 33 yards this year. Barring a setback, Smith should once again be available in Week 4 despite his injury status.
SEPTEMBER 29, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Hauls in lone target Smith brought in his lone target for nine yards in Sunday's 17-14 loss to the Falcons.
Impact Smith was limited in practice during the week due to a knee injury, but he handled a normal workload in Sunday's loss. Evan Engram and Kyle Rudolph were each on the field for more offensive snaps than Smith against the Falcons, and the 24-year-old has had a limited role in the passing game to begin the year with just three receptions for 33 yards across the first three weeks of the season.
SEPTEMBER 27, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Limited in practice again Smith (knee) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Zack Rosenblatt of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Impact For the third week in a row, Smith is appearing on the Giants' injury report with a knee issue, but the Giants haven't suggested his availability for Sunday's game against the Falcons is in any jeopardy. That said, even if Smith suits up, he could be headed for a smaller role on offense if top tight end Evan Engram (calf) -- who practiced on a limited basis Thursday -- is able to make his season debut. Smith has served as the No. 2 tight end though New York's first two games, logging 44 and 45 percent snap shares in Weeks 1 and 2, respectively, while catching two balls for 24 yards between those contests.
SEPTEMBER 23, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Begins week as limited Smith (knee) was a limited participant at Wednesday's practice.
Impact Smith has earned an elevated workload in the Giants' first two games of the campaign with Evan Engram (calf) sidelined, seeing a 44.6-percent share of the snaps on offense. But Smith has been targeted just two times on his way to two catches for 24 yards. With Engram returning to the practice field Wednesday as limited himself, Smith will revert to a much smaller snap count if the former is cleared for his season debut. In that event, Kyle Rudolph would serve as the No. 2 TE behind Engram.
SEPTEMBER 22, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Totals two receptions Thursday Smith secured both of his targets for 24 yards in Thursday's 30-29 loss to Washington.
Impact Smith had a starting role alongside Kyle Rudolph on Thursday with Evan Engram (calf) sidelined, and he played 46 percent of the team's offensive snaps. Although he wasn't targeted in the season opener, the 2019 sixth-rounder generated modest production in the narrow loss to Washington. Smith's role should decrease once Engram is cleared to make his season debut.
SEPTEMBER 20, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Not targeted in loss Smith failed to record a target in Sunday's 27-13 loss to the Broncos.
Impact With starting tight end Evan Engram (calf) sidelined in Week 1, Smith and veteran Kyle Rudolph operated as the team's two top tight ends. Smith played on 48 percent of the team's offensive snaps, which was well behind Rudolph's 77 percent snap percentage. The third-year veteran Smith was not involved in the passing game, and Engram's eventual return will only complicate his outlook further. Even if Engram is sidelined again in Week 2, Smith remains well off the fantasy radar in a difficult matchup against the formidable Washington defense.
SEPTEMBER 15, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Set to play Sunday Smith (knee) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's contest against the Broncos, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Impact Both Smith and veteran TE Kyle Rudolph (foot) were limited in practice this week, only to be cleared for Week 1 action. Meanwhile, Evan Engram, the team's No. 1 at the position, won't be out there due to a calf injury. As a result, Rudolph and Smith will be the Giants' primary tight ends Sunday, with the potential for one of Ryan Izzo, Chris Myarick or Jake Hausmann to be elevated from the practice squad.
SEPTEMBER 10, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Another limited session Smith (knee) was a limited practice participant Thursday, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Impact Smith's knee injury popped up this week, leaving all the Giants' TEs with health concerns in advance of Week 1. With Evan Engram yet to practice due to a calf injury he sustained in the exhibition finale, the team maybe forced to roll with Smith and Kyle Rudolph (foot) -- who has been limited all week like Smith -- at tight end Sunday versus the Broncos.

Jones looking for wins in 2nd full season as Giants QB

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones isn't looking at his third NFL season as a make-or-break situation
SEPTEMBER 8, 2021 • Associated Press
Limited Wednesday Smith (knee) practiced on a limited basis Wednesday, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Impact Meanwhile, top tight end Evan Engram (calf) spent the session on a side field with the training staff, and offseason addition Kyle Rudolph (foot) joined Smith as a limited participant. Assuming Engram is unable to go Sunday against the Broncos, Smith and Rudolph seem poised to work as a TE tandem in the Giants' opener.
