INJURIES

Considered day-to-day Coach Anthony Lynn said Monday that Jackson (quadriceps) is day-to-day, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register reports.
Impact "We'll try to work [Jackson] in practice some time this week if he can," Lynn said. Jackson, who missed nine games due to a foot injury in 2019, only logged two carries for four yards before exiting Sunday's game against the Bengals. Rookie fourth-round pick Joshua Kelley had 12 carries for 60 yards and a score Week 1, and he looked like a productive complement to Austin Ekeler, so it's possible that Jackson could be relegated to the No. 3 role when he does return.

Won't return Sunday Jackson is ruled out to retake the field Sunday against Cincinnati due to a quad injury.
Impact Jackson will work to shake his quad injury in time to return against Kansas City in Week 2. He carried the ball twice for four yards before leaving the field Sunday. Rookie fourth-round pick Joshua Kelley stands to see increased touches as long as Jackson remains sidelined.

Cleared for Week 1 Jackson (toe) wasn't listed on Wednesday's injury report and will play in Sunday's matchup versus the Bengals.
Impact Jackson dealt with a toe injury toward the end of training camp, but the 24-year-old running back has shaken off the issue and will be ready to begin his third NFL season. It's still uncertain whether Jackson or rookie Joshua Kelley is the No. 2 behind Austin Ekeler, but Jackson does have an edge with experience, as he produced 200 yards on 29 carries (6.9 YPC) last year.

Should be ready for Week 1 Head coach Anthony Lynn said Jackson (toe) has been running and will be "fine" for Sunday's game versus the Bengals, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Impact It sounds like Jackson will be at practice Wednesday in at least a limited capacity and should be working at full speed by the end of the week. He's missed more than a week of practice, which is detrimental since he's competing with Joshua Kelley for snaps behind Austin Ekeler, but his status should be secure if he stays on the field this week. Lynn has yet to name the Chargers' No. 2 RB, but Jackson has a leg up based on experience.

Dealing with foot issue Jackson was held out from Sunday's practice with a foot injury, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Impact This is the first report we've seen this summer of Jackson missing practice time, as he otherwise appears to be the favorite to serve as Austin Ekeler's complement in the backfield. A prolonged absence could open the door for fourth-round rookie Joshua Kelley, but there hasn't been any indication Jackson's injury is serious.

Looking good for backup role Jackson has the inside track for the No. 2 spot in the Chargers backfield, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register reports.
Impact His biggest fan may be lead back Austin Ekeler, who praised his teammate as "so unique" and even said he's making an effort to emulate aspects of Jackson's running style. Jackson has averaged 5.1 yards on 79 carries and caught 24 of 30 targets to this point in his career, but injuries have limited him to 20 appearances in two seasons, perhaps playing a role in the Chargers' selection of Joshua Kelley in the fourth round of the 2020 draft. A recent report from Daniel Popper of The Athletic suggests Jackson has been running ahead of Kelley in practice, mixing in behind Ekeler with the first-team offense. There's still time for Kelley to make a move, but he's looking like the underdog so far.
