INJURIES

Busts out for big TD in win McNichols carried the ball four times for 78 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 41-24 win over the Raiders.
Impact The Commanders rolled with a backfield committee in the wake of Austin Ekeler (Achilles) being lost for the season, and while McNichols saw fewer carries than Chris Rodriguez (11 for 39 yards) and rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt (eight for 26 yards and a TD), he made the biggest impact with a 60-yard romp to the end zone in the second quarter that put Washington in the lead for good. The score was his first of the season after he racked up four rushing TDs on 55 carries over 17 regular-season games in 2024 before adding another on just five totes in the playoffs. Given the offense's success in the win, McNichols' role and volume may not change much in Week 4 against the Falcons.

Back to full practice McNichols (hamstring) was a full participant in Thursday's practice.
Impact McNichols' hamstring issue is evidently minor, as he's back at practice in a full capacity. With Austin Ekeler (Achilles) set to miss the remainder of the season, McNichols appears to be the next man up as the Commanders' third-down and long-down-and-distance running back after handling 16 offensive snaps following Ekeler's injury last Thursday. McNichols is unlikely to be fantasy relevant.
SEPTEMBER 18 • ROTOWIRE
Listed as limited McNichols was a limited practice participant Wednesday due to a hamstring injury.
Impact McNichols wasn't listed on the injury report last week, when he took 20 percent of snaps but finished without a touch in a 27-18 loss to the Packers on Thursday. Fellow running back Austin Ekeler suffered an Achilles' tear in the fourth quarter, opening up room for McNichols to get more work moving forward, though likely as part of a three-man backfield with Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Chris Rodriguez. A hamstring injury could complicate things, but McNichols still has a few more chances to practice in full before Sunday's matchup with the Raiders.

Handles four carries in win McNichols rushed four times for 25 yards in Sunday's 21-6 win over the Giants.
Impact McNichols played 13 of the Commanders' 70 offensive snaps in the contest, operated as the No. 3 running back behind Austin Ekeler (33) and Jacory Croskey-Merritt (23). With limited opportunities, McNichols will continue to struggle to record meaningful stats for fantasy going forward, barring injuries to Ekeler, Croskey-Merrott or Chris Rodriguez, who was a healthy scratch in Week 1. The Commanders are set to square off against the Packers in Week 2.

How a 'Bill' Becomes a Phenom: Meet Commanders Rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt

One of the surprise stars of the preseason is a seventh-round RB whose given name is Jacory but goes by Bill. Yep, there's a backstory.

How a 'Bill' Becomes a Phenom: Meet Commanders Rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt
Stuffed in preseason finale McNichols took three carries for a loss of four yards in Saturday's 30-3 preseason loss to Baltimore.
Impact He was the second running back to get a touch, with Chris Rodriguez starting while both Austin Ekeler and Jacory Croskey-Merritt rested. It looks like the decision for cutdown day will be whether or not to keep McNichols as the fourth running back, as Rodriguez mostly worked ahead of him this preseason and took 17 carries for 118 yards. McNichols finishes with nine carries for 24 yards, showing a glimpse of why he's mostly viewed as a passing-down back. If he ends up on Washington's roster or practice squad, any shot at fantasy value will probably depend on Ekeler missing time (which would open up the passing-down role).
AUGUST 23 • ROTOWIRE
Takes four touches for 13 yards McNichols took three carries for 10 yards and one catch for three yards in Monday's preseason loss to the Bengals.
Impact He was the third RB into the game for Washington for a second straight week, behind Chris Rodriguez and Jacory Croskey-Merritt (while Brian Robinson and Austin Ekeler didn't play). There's nonetheless a chance McNichols makes the Week 1 roster, as he's familiar with Kliff Kingsbury's offense and will bump up a spot on the depth chart if the Robinson trade rumors come to fruition. It does seem Rodriguez and Croskey-Merritt are more likely to take over Robinson's role, but McNichols helped fill the gap when Robinson or Ekeler was out last year.

Stayting in Washington McNichols agreed to a one-year deal with Washington on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Impact McNichols mostly served as the No. 3 running back for the Commanders in 2024 behind Brian Robinson and Austin Ekeler, and he'll likely do the same in 2025. McNichols finished the 2024 regular season with 55 carries for 261 yards and four touchdowns while adding nine catches (on 12 targets) for 27 yards and 164 kick return yards.

While he mostly performed well, the enduring memory of McNichols' season for a lot of Washington fans will be be his lost fumble on a kick return during the NFC Championship Game -- a mistake that allowed the Eagles to stretch their lead from eight points to 15.
