Three kickoff returns in SB win Mickens returned three kickoffs for 75 yards during the Buccaneers' 31-9 win over the Chiefs in Super Bowl LV on Sunday.

Impact Mickens filled his usual role on special teams during the championship win while not logging any targets. The four-year veteran established a new career high this season with seven receptions, which netted a modest 58 yards. However, Mickens was largely an afterthought on offense for most of the season, which wasn't surprising given the Buccaneers' wealth of talent at receiver. He played the 2020 season on a one-year deal, and while he averaged a solid 24.3 yards per kickoff return and 6.2 yards per punt return, it remains to be seen if the Buccaneers will look to a younger, cheaper option for his role in 2021.

The speedy four-year pro averaged an impressive 24.2 yards per kickoff return Sunday, and given that special teams have played a prominent part in turning the tide of multiple Super Bowls, Mickens stands a chance of making an impact in the upcoming, potentially high-scoring title game versus the Chiefs.

Impact Mickens had been demoted to the practice squad after the Buccaneers switched to Kenjon Barner as their primary return man for kickoffs and punts, but Barner was placed on IR due to a groin injury, creating the opening Mickens needed to get promoted from the practice squad. Impact The third-year wideout saw veteran running back Kenjon Barner vulture one kickoff return opportunity before exiting the game with a concussion, so it remains to be seen if coach Bruce Arians has designs on eventually transitioning Mickens to handling punt returns exclusively. Mickens is doing a good job in that capacity by averaging 6.0 yards on eight returns, ranking him fourth in the league among players with at least that many opportunities. With Barner's status for Thursday night's Week 5 matchup against the Bears firmly up in the air, however, it's certainly possible Mickens handles double duty on special teams in that contest.
