Restructures contract
Matthews had his contract restructured Saturday to provide the Falcons $7.95 million in cap space, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Impact
The Falcons, like most teams, are pressed up against the cap, which necessitated the move. Matthews has been the cornerstone of the team's offensive line since being drafted in the first round back in 2014 and is under contract with the franchise for three more seasons.

Suits up for 16 games in 2020
Matthews logged his 16th start of the season during Atlanta's 44-27 Week 17 loss to the Buccaneers.
Impact
Matthews again proved to be durable during his seventh pro campaign out of Texas A&M, fielding 100 percent of Atlanta's offensive snaps in 15 of 16 games. He enjoyed a relatively clean 2020, going without a holding penalty while drawing only two false start flags all season. The 28-year-old is under contract for three more seasons at an average cap hit of $19.4 million, as the Falcons' front five aims to improve upon a turbulent campaign. Atlanta ranked 31st at just 3.7 yards per carry as a team, finishing tied for 23rd with 41 sacks allowed.

Playing Week 2
Matthews (knee) is active Week 2 against Dallas.
Impact
Matthews served as a limited participant in practice both Thursday and Friday, but early indications were that the left tackle will suit up despite a "questionable" designation. The morning's inactive report will ultimately confirm that, giving Matt Ryan and the passing attack an extra layer of protection.

On track for Week 2
Matthews (knee), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game in Dallas, is expected to play, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Impact
The left tackle's expected availability is good news for quarterback Matt Ryan, who threw 450 yards on 54 attempts in the Week 1 loss to Seattle. Another high-volume passing game could on the docket for Ryan again Sunday, as most sports books list the Atlanta-Dallas game with the highest total of the Week 2 slate.

Questionable against Cowboys
Matthews is considered questionable for Sunday's game versus the Cowboys, Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Matthews was limited for the last two practices of the week, which is a good sign for his availability Sunday. Matt Gono is ready to start at left tackle if Matthews can't go.

Trending in the right direction
Matthews (knee) was upgraded to limited practice participation Thursday after sitting out Wednesday's session, Jason Butt of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Impact
The 2018 Pro Bowler sustained a knee injury during Sunday's loss to Seattle, but he was able to return to game action and finish out the contest. By making a practice appearance Thursday, Matthews is trending towards his 95th consecutive start as the Falcons travel to take on the Cowboys in Week 2.

Held out Monday
Matthews (knee) did not participate during Wednesday's practice session, William McFadden of the Falcons' official site reports.
Impact
The 28-year-old offensive tackle sustained the injury during Sunday's 38-25 loss to Seattle, but he was able to tough his way through the issue and play to the final whistle. Matthews is certainly a key fixture to Atlanta's offensive line as the blind-side protector to Matt Ryan, and one of two players among the unit who has ever played in a Pro Bowl. If there is a route for him to feasibly make his way back into the lineup, Atlanta will almost definitely roll him out for a crucial matchup against another 0-1 team in the Cowboys.

Impact
Matthews enters his seventh NFL campaign having displayed supreme durability to this point in his career, starting 95 of a possible 96 games since entering the league as the No. 6 overall draft choice in 2014. The 28-year-old left tackle is one of four sure starters along the Falcons' offensive line -- joining Alex Mack, Chris Lindstrom and Kaleb McGary -- but left guard remains a question mark for Week 1. One year removed from the first Pro Bowl nod of his career, Matthews is playing at a high level as the protector of Matt Ryan's blind side.
