Emergency QB3 vs. Indianapolis Nussmeier (coach's decision) is inactive but will serve as the Chiefs' emergency third quarterback against the Colts on Sunday.

Impact For a second consecutive week, Nussmeier will be the emergency QB3. That means the rookie seventh-rounder is prohibited from playing Sunday night unless both Patrick Mahomes and Justin Fields leave the game due to injury, illness or ejection.

Emergency QB for MNF Nussmeier (coach's decision) is inactive as the emergency third quarterback for Monday night's game against the Broncos.

Impact Nussmeier will be the reserve option behind Patrick Mahomes and Justin Fields. The seventh-round rookie out of LSU will only be able to play if both Mahomes and Fields cannot return to the game. If the QB room is healthy, Nussmeier's only hope to free himself of this role is by outplaying Justin Fields regularly in practice.

Plays wire to wire in preseason finale Nussmeier completed 22 of 34 passes for 198 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in the Chiefs' 9-9 preseason tie with the Seahawks on Friday.

Impact The rookie seventh-round pick got an extended opportunity Friday and made relatively good use of it, although his 5.8 yards per attempt underscore Nussmeier largely played things close to the vest when dropping back. The LSU product finished preseason having completed 44 of 70 passes for 370 yards with no touchdowns and one interception, and it remains to be seen if he's locked in the No. 3 quarterback role over Chris Oladokun.

Serviceable in second preseason game Nussmeier completed nine of 17 passes for 74 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in the Chiefs' 16-15 preseason loss to the Buccaneers on Saturday.

Impact For the second time in as many preseason games, the rookie seventh-round pick followed starter Justin Fields into the contest. Nussmeier once again mostly kept his throws close to the line of scrimmage while averaging just 4.4 yards per attempt, but he did lead the Chiefs to a field goal on a 13-play drive during his first possession beginning just past the midway point of the second quarter. Nussmeier is likely to see plenty of action and potentially even draw a starting assignment in Friday's home preseason finale against the Seahawks.

Solid in preseason debut Nussmeier completed 13 of 19 passes for 98 yards during the Chiefs' 20-12 preseason loss to the Rams on Saturday.

Impact Justin Fields served as the Chiefs' starter Saturday and led the team's first two offensive drives before turning the keys over to Nussmeier. The rookie seventh-rounder looked good out of the gate, leading long scoring drives in the second quarter than ended with field goals from 37 and 35 yards from Harrison Butker. Fields is firmly entrenched as the Chiefs' backup quarterback behind Patrick Mahomes (knee), so Nussmeier is competing against Chris Oladokun for the QB3 role in the upcoming season. Kansas City's next preseason game against Tampa Bay takes place Saturday, Aug. 22.
