Joins Minnesota's practice squad Neal (hamstring) signed a contract with the Vikings' practice squad Wednesday, Rob Kleifield of the team's official site reports.

Impact New Orleans waived Neal in early September on an injury settlement while the second-year running back tended to a hamstring issue, but he appears to have since made a full recovery. After working out with Minnesota on Tuesday, Neal quickly landed a contract, improving the organization's depth at running back while Jordan Mason (thumb) is on injured reserve. As a rookie last season, Neal appeared in 10 games for the Saints, carrying 57 times for 206 yards (3.6 average) and two touchdowns while adding 17 receptions for 104 yards on 19 targets.

Set to sign with Minnesota The Vikings are set to sign Neal to a contract, NFL reporter Jordan Schultz reported Tuesday.

Impact Neal tried out with the Vikings on Tuesday. The running back was cut from the Saints' injured reserve Sept. 3 and has recovered from the hamstring injury that landed him on the list. The second-year player out of Kansas accumulated 57 rushes for 206 yards and a touchdown, alongside 17 receptions for 104 yards over 10 regular-season games with the Saints as a rookie.

Gets cut from IR with injury settlement The Saints waived Neal (hamstring) from injured reserve with an injury settlement Thursday, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.

Impact Neal picked up a hamstring injury in early August, and while he returned to practice Aug. 19 and suited up for preseason Week 2 on Aug. 22, he left that contest due to a likely aggravation of that issue, ending up on IR on cut-down day. The terms of his injury settlement aren't known, but once they're met, he'll be eligible to sign with a team.

Placed on injured reserve The Saints placed Neal (hamstring) on injured reserve Sunday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.

Impact Neal will be required to stay on IR throughout the entirety of the 2026 regular season unless he is waived with an injury designation. The 2025 sixth-rounder sustained a hamstring injury during the Saints' 34-0 preseason loss to the Rams on Aug. 22. Neal rushed 57 times for 206 yards and two touchdowns over 10 regular-season games in 2025 but will likely need to wait until 2027 for another shot in the backfield.

Diagnosed with hamstring injury Neal sustained a hamstring injury during the Saints' 34-0 preseason loss to the Rams on Saturday, Matthew Paras of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Impact Neal appeared to pick up the injury following a four-yard carry during the first quarter of Saturday's contest. The 2025 sixth-rounder will undergo further tests to determine the severity of the injury, but it puts him in jeopardy of missing the Saints' preseason finale against the Cowboys on Friday. With Alvin Kamara (knee) and Audric Estime (ankle) also dealing with injuries, Kendre Miller figures to pick up the bulk of rotational backfield snaps behind Travis Etienne, with Ty Chandler and CJ Donaldson in the mix for reps.

Goes to locker room Saturday Neal (undisclosed) went to the locker room during the first half of Saturday's preseason game against the Rams, Ross Jackson of WWL Louisiana reports.

Impact Neal appeared to come up lame following a four-yard run in the first quarter. The nature of the injury has not been announced, but it might be related to the hamstring injury that prevented Neal from playing in the Saints' preseason opener against the Jaguars.

Impact Apart from starter Travis Etienne, the Saints have had trouble keeping their running backs healthy this summer. Neal and Miller seemed to be competing with Audric Estime (ankle) for the No. 3 job, but the Week 1 depth chart beyond Etienne may be determined by health above all else. Right now, Miller and Neal are positioned to mix in for some first-team reps.

AUGUST 19 • ROTOWIRE

Idle for preseason opener Neal (hamstring) will not play in Saturday's preseason game against the Jaguars, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.

Impact Neal has been working through a hamstring injury that he picked up in practice last week, and he'll join Kendre Miller (back) on the sidelines for Saturday's exhibition game. With both Miller and Neal not playing, the bulk of the rotational backfield reps will go to Ty Chandler, Audric Estime and CJ Donaldson.

Nursing hamstring injury Neal did not participate in Saturday's training camp practice due to a hamstring injury, Ross Jackson of WWL Louisiana reports.

Impact Neal tweaked his hamstring during Thursday's practice, and the injury prevented him from participating in Saturday's session. The 2025 sixth-rounder is currently listed as the Saints' RB3, but an extended absence could open the window for Ty Chandler, Kendre Miller (back) or Audric Estime to take the No. 3 job. Neal will aim to be available for the Saints' preseasonn opener against the Jaguars on Saturday, Aug. 15.

AUGUST 8 • ROTOWIRE

Practicing to begin camp Neal (undisclosed) is practicing at the start of training camp this week, Jeff reports.

Impact Neal dealt with an undisclosed issue during the spring but is past the injury and working alongside Kendre Miller with the Saints' second-team offense. The two are competing for roles behind Travis Etienne and Alvin Kamara in the New Orleans backfield.

JUNE 19 • WHODATDISH.COM

Nursing minor injury Saints head coach Kellen Moore said Monday that Neal (undisclosed) will be limited at minicamp due to a minor injury suffered early June, Erin Summers of ESPN reports.

Impact Neal's exact injury remains undisclosed, but it doesn't appear severe enough to cause concern about his status for the start of training camp in July. Still, it's notable that the 2025 sixth-round pick will be limited at mandatory minicamp as he works to compete for a backfield role in Year 2. With New Orleans having inked new lead back Travis Etienne to a four-year, $52 million contract in March and Alvin Kamara still on the roster, Neal appears positioned to compete with Kendre Miller (ACL), Ty Chandler and Audric Estime for reserve opportunities.
