Impact As Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Sunday, Samuel should make an appearance at practice this week, but the 49ers intend to ease him into the fold as he works to be activated from injured reserve. Due to the 2020-based IR rules, the team can technically bring Samuel off the list before Sunday's game versus the Eagles. That said, San Francisco likely will wait until its Week 5 contest against the Dolphins on Oct. 11 to do so. In the meantime, the 49ers' receiving corps will continue to be manned by Kendrick Bourne, Brandon Aiyuk, Trent Taylor, Mohamed Sanu and Dante Pettis.

His availability for next Sunday's game against the Eagles remains uncertain, but it sounds like he'll at least make it back to the practice field, where the 49ers can then evaluate his health and explosiveness. The Niners certainly could use the help, as they're currently preparing to face the Giants in Week 3 without QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle), TE George Kittle (knee) and RBs Raheem Mostert (knee) and Tevin Coleman (knee) in the lineup. Samuel should be a crucial part of the offense whenever he's ready, whether he's catching passes from Garoppolo or Nick Mullens.

Looking at Week 4 return Coach Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers are aiming for Samuel (foot) to make his season debut Week 4 against the Eagles, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.

Impact Shanahan explained the decision to place Samuel on injured reserve Saturday, telling Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com that the wide receiver had some lingering soreness in his left foot that developed into a "little bit of a setback." Consequently, Samuel has a few weeks to complete his rehab from June surgery on a Jones fracture in his left foot with the hope he'll be available Oct. 4 versus Philly. In the meantime, the 49ers will rely on Kendrick Bourne, Trent Taylor and Dante Pettis in a receiving corps that also has question marks surrounding Brandon Aiyuk (hamstring) and Richie James (hamstring).
