Impact Allen missed practice all of last week due to a back issue and didn't suit up for Sunday's loss to Arizona. His absence from practice to begin this week isn't a promising sign for his chance of returning to action against San Francisco in Week 3, though he'll have two more days to get back on the field prior to the release of Friday's final injury report. If Allen can't suit up Sunday, Hunter Long is likely to continue to back up Colby Parkinson at tight end.

Allen and Hunter Long are in a competition to be No. 2 on the depth chart at the start of the season, but Long has failed to bring in a target through two preseason games. The duo's final chance to make their case will come against the Texans in a preseason Week 3 tilt.

Impact Longtime starter Tyler Higbee is expected to miss the early part of the season, at the very least, after suffering ACL and MCL tears in a playoff loss at Detroit. Free-agent signing Colby Parkinson is on track to take over as the starter, but it isn't clear if he'll play as many snaps as Higbee normally would, potentially opening the door for Allen to have a decent-sized role. The Rams typically don't use multi-TE formations often, so it's also possible Allen gets most of his snaps on special teams even with Higbee out. Either way, the 2023 fifth-round pick has a tricky path to fantasy relevance despite showing some nice flashes late last season when both Higbee and Long were briefly unavailable.

Impact Tyler Higbee's return from a neck injury did lower the rookie tight end's usage on offense, but Higbee didn't completely dominate the snap share at the position like normal, with Higbee on the field for 47 snaps to Allen's 26. The veteran Higbee did outproduce Allen with four catches for 36 yards on five targets, but Week 16's usage numbers against the Saints will be telling on whether the rookie has earned a more significant role, or if this was just a case of coach Sean McVay being cautious with Higbee before returning him to his nearly every-down role on offense.
