Ready to run: Panthers' offense will look 'vastly different'

Coach Matt Rhule promised the Carolina Panthers offense will take on a vastly different look moving forward after the team's third straight loss

Chuba Hubbard - Scores first NFL touchdown Hubbard rushed 16 times for 61 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 34-28 loss to Minnesota.
Impact Hubbard finally hit pay dirt in his fourth start in place of the injured Christian McCaffrey (hamstring). The latter was just placed on IR this past week, assuring the rookie tailback at least two more starts following his solid outing Sunday. Hubbard will get a very favorable matchup in Week 7 when the Panthers take on the Giants' 28th-ranked rush defense (137.2 rushing yards allowed per game).

Chuba Hubbard - Lead back for foreseeable future Hubbard is expected to operate as the lead running back for at least the next three weeks after Christian McCaffrey (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve Saturday.
Impact It's obviously a disappointing development for McCaffrey, who had already been ruled out ahead of the Week 6 contest, but Hubbard fantasy managers have to be giddy about the guaranteed workload, especially with three straight matchups against inferior defensive talent on tap. The rookie fourth-round pick has certainly lived up to the billing as a top-tier backup, accumulating 284 total yards on 58 touches since taking over for the injured McCaffrey in Week 3. While the Panthers will likely sign or elevate another running back from the practice squad in short order, it's hard to imagine anyone threatening Hubbard's workload at the moment.

Chuba Hubbard - Another start on tap Hubbard will be the Panthers' starting running back Sunday against the Vikings with Christian McCaffrey (hamstring) sidelined for a third consecutive game, David Newton of ESPN.com...
Impact Since taking over for McCaffrey in the second quarter of a Week 3 win at Houston, Hubbard has racked up 48 carries for 210 yards and 10 catches (on 13 targets) for 74 yards. Most of Hubbard's output during that stretch came Week 5, when he reeled off 134 yards from scrimmage on 29 touches against the Eagles. With Royce Freeman the only competition for reps out of the Panthers backfield -- he has 13 touches over the last three games -- Hubbard yet again is poised to be the lead runner in Carolina.

Hubbard was 'excellent.' With McCaffrey to join him, could Panthers get their mojo back? The Carolina Panthers need Chuba Hubbard and Christian McCaffrey. Perhaps the running backs need each other, too.
OCTOBER 11, 2021 • NEWSOBSERVER.COM
Chuba Hubbard - Over 130 yards from scrimmage Hubbard rushed 24 times for 101 yards and caught five of six targets for 33 yards in Sunday's 21-18 loss to the Eagles
Impact Hubbard played very well in his second NFL start in place of the injured Christian McCaffrey (hamstring). The rookie fourth-rounder began with a 26-yard rush in the first quarter and kept his momentum going with a number of nice gains afterward, tying for the team lead in receptions as well. Overall, his play earned him nearly 30 touches on the day, mimicking McCaffrey's usual workload while backup Royce Freeman was restricted to just four touches. While it was great to see Hubbard take advantage of his opportunity Sunday, the seemingly likely return of McCaffrey in Week 6 versus the Vikings could suddenly return Hubbard to second-string duty. Given his production, though, Hubbard's presence could potentially help Carolina manage McCaffrey's exposure upon his return, making the team's backfield situation worth monitoring further going forward.

Chuba Hubbard - Draws Week 5 start Hubbard will pick up a second straight start at running back Sunday against the Eagles with Christian McCaffrey (hamstring) inactive for the contest, Zach Berman of The Athletic re...
Impact The starting assignment was fully expected for Hubbard after McCaffrey took a doubtful designation into the weekend following limited practices Wednesday through Friday. While McCaffrey was sidelined for the Week 4 loss to Dallas, Hubbard paced the backfield with 13 carries for 57 yards, but he was limited to two catches for 14 yards on two targets in the passing game, as Carolina leaned on Rodney Smith as its primary third-down back. As such, a true three-down role may not await Hubbard on Sunday, but he still looks like a strong fantasy option as the lead runner for a Carolina squad that will be facing the NFL's 31st-ranked run defense.

Chuba Hubbard - Likely getting another start Week 5 Hubbard is expected to remain the Panthers' starting running back for Sunday's game against the Eagles with top option Christian McCaffrey (hamstring) listed as doubtful for the co...
Impact Though McCaffrey and head coach Matt Rhule consistently expressed optimism throughout the week about the former's recovery from the hamstring injury, McCaffrey looks set to miss his second straight game after he managed only limited participation in practices Wednesday through Friday. Unless McCaffrey exhibits remarkable progress heading into Sunday, he'll yield starting duties to Hubbard, who played 47 percent of the offensive snaps in the Panthers' Week 4 loss to the Cowboys and finished with 71 yards on 15 touches (13 carries, two catches). A negative game script for most of that contest resulted in Hubbard losing some passing-down work to Rodney Smith, but the rookie could be in better position to deliver a more useful fantasy line Week 5. Not only are the Panthers home favorites in the contest, but Hubbard will also be facing off against the NFL's 31st-ranked run defense.

FANTASY PLAYS: Players to start and sit for NFL Week 5

The Carolina Panthers’ defense started the season hot, but were a little less scary last week against Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys
OCTOBER 7, 2021 • Associated Press
Chuba Hubbard - Manages 71 total yards Hubbard recorded 13 rushes for 57 yards in Sunday's Week 4 loss to the Cowboys. He added two receptions for 14 yards.
Impact Hubbard led the Panthers' backfield, accounting for 13 of the team's 24 rushing attempts. He was particularly effective early in the contest, as he managed gains of 14 and 12 yards on the team's third offensive possession. Despite the hot start, he was scripted out of the chance to produce as the Panthers' fell behind by three touchdowns by late in the third quarter. It's unclear how long Christian McCaffrey (hamstring) will remain sidelined, but assuming he can't return in Week 5 against the Eagles, Hubbard should again have the chance to lead the Panthers backfield.
