Goes on 60-day injured list The Red Sox placed Penrod on the 60-day injured list Thursday with a left elbow UCL sprain, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Impact The move clears a spot on Boston's 40-man roster. Penrod is attempting to rest and rehab his injury rather than undergo surgery, but it will be a long time before he can pitch in a game even in a best-case scenario.

Doesn't need surgery Penrod isn't expected to need surgery on his injured left elbow, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Impact Penrod has been dealing with a sore left elbow and got an MRI on Thursday. The results of the testing were encouraging, as the lefty reliever doesn't appear to be slated to go under the knife. However, manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Penrod will be "out a while," which could impact his chances of making the Opening Day bullpen.

Gets MRI on elbow Penrod is dealing with a sore left elbow and was sent in for an MRI on Thursday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Impact The Red Sox will wait on the results of the MRI before a prognosis is made available, but at the very least, Penrod will likely be shut down for a few days with the injury. The 27-year-old southpaw made seven appearances in relief for Boston last September and is competing for a spot in the big club's Opening Day bullpen.

Impact The 27-year-old lefty split the majority of his season between Double-A and Triple-A, establishing himself as a fringe prospect, despite his age. Walks were an issue for Penrod at Triple-A (16.1 percent walk rate) and he walked four batters in four innings while up with the big club.

Impact After starting the season at Double-A Portland, Penrod will now get his first taste of the big leagues. The 27-year-old southpaw owns a 5.93 ERA and 1.70 WHIP through 27.1 innings at Triple-A, however, so he will likely be limited to low-leverage situations while with the Red Sox.

Fans seven in return Penrod allowed two runs on three hits and struck out seven over 2.2 innings for Triple-A Worcester on Friday.

Impact Penrod, who had been sidelined since June 6 with a leg injury, started for the WooSox but was not give a long leash in his return. He fanned six of the first seven hitters faced before allowing runs in his third and final frame. The 27-year-old left-hander, whom the Red Sox signed out of independent ball last season, could be a bullpen option for Boston down the stretch.

Coming off IL on Friday Penrod (shin) will return from Triple-A Worcester's 7-day injured list to start Friday against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Impact A 27-year-old lefty whom the Red Sox signed out of independent ranks last August, Penrod had been one of the organization's better upper-level starters before he landed on the IL on June 9 with left shin inflammation. He'll slot back into the Worcester rotation this weekend, but since he didn't head out on a rehab assignment beforehand, he could be limited from a workload standpoint in his return to the mound. Penrod has turned in a 2.91 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 61:20 K:BB across 43.1 innings between Worcester and Double-A Portland this season.
