Impact Four of the eight hits Marte allowed went for extra bases, compounding his troubles in a poor start. This was his return to the rotation after last appearing out of the bullpen Sept. 11 with five scoreless innings against the Padres. With Logan Webb (finger) shut down for the year, there's room for Marte to draw another start in a rematch versus the Dodgers at home in the final series of the season.

Impact Marte entered the game in the top of the fourth, but it's unclear if he making a planned piggyback appearance behind starter Anthony Molina. The Giants turned to Marte after Molina was tattooed for seven earned runs on nine hits and two walks across three innings, with the right-hander needing 72 pitches to record his nine outs. Marte pitched impressively in long relief and now owns a 2.45 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 9:6 K:BB across his first 14.2 big-league innings. His strong performance Friday could put him back in the mix to make a start or two before the season comes to a close.

Piggybacks Wilkinson on Friday Marte struck out two and allowed three earned runs on four hits and two walks across five innings of relief in Friday's 10-6 loss to the Mets.

Impact After tossing 4.2 innings of one-run ball as a starter in his MLB debut last Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader versus the Diamondbacks, Marte was deployed as part of a piggyback tandem with Wilkinson. Both hurlers tossed exactly 62 pitches, but Marte worked longer and more effectively than Wilkinson, who yielded seven runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks over three innings. Wilkinson has started in all four of his appearances with the Giants, but the Giants have limited him to less than four innings on three occasions. The Giants could continue to have Wilkinson and Marte work in piggyback arrangement when the fifth spot in the rotation comes up as the team looks to limit the workloads for both young pitchers down the stretch.
