Impact After going nearly all year without blowing a save chance, Gomez has done just that in back-to-back appearances. He's allowed seven runs (six earned) over six innings in September to stumble late in the campaign. Gomez is at a 4.22 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 61:37 K:BB with 22 saves in 24 chances and six holds over 64 innings. Given that the Twins are fading out of playoff contention, it's unlikely Gomez will lose many meaningful opportunities over the last week-plus of the season. That said, he is unlikely to be available Friday after pitching three consecutive days, which may have played a role in his blown saves.

Impact The unlikely closer, who was picked up by Minnesota after being DFA'd by Tampa Bay in early May, made it to the final two weeks of the regular season without blowing a save chance, but Gomez couldn't protect a 2-0 lead in the ninth inning Wednesday. He allowed a couple singles before Anthony Volpe tied it up with a two-out double, and after walking another batter Gonez was replaced by Kody Funderburk. Gomez has been tagged for multiple runs in three of his last eight appearances, stumbling to an 11.05 ERA, 2.32 WHIP and 9:7 K:BB in 7.1 innings over that stretch as his luck finally begins to run out.

Impact Gomez entered the game in the top of the ninth inning but was largely ineffective, throwing just 12 of his 21 pitches for strikes and quickly running into trouble. He walked Bazzana before Angel Martinez doubled, then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Bazzana to score the go-ahead run. Brayan Rocchio followed with a two-run double that stretched Cleveland's advantage to three, and Gomez was removed after retiring just one of the five batters he faced. Gomez saw his run of four consecutive scoreless outings come to an end, and while he's posted seven scoreless appearances over his last nine appearances, he's given up seven runs in that span. One subpar outing won't remove Gomez from his closing duties, however, especially since he's gone 22-for-22 in save chances in 2026 while posting a 3.92 ERA through 59 appearances in 2026.
