Flores homers and drives in 4 to lead Giants over Astros 7-2

Wilmer Flores hit his third homer of the season and drove in four runs to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 7-2 win over the Houston Astros
APRIL 1, 2025 • Associated Press
Homers in Opening Day start Flores went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer in Thursday's 6-4 victory over the Reds.
Impact Flores delivered the decisive blow in San Francisco's season-opening win with a three-run, go-ahead blast off Ian Gibaut in the top of the ninth inning. Flores was initially expected to fill the short side of a platoon this season, though he got the Opening Day nod at DH after Jerar Encarnacion (hand) landed on the IL. Flores should see regular playing time with Encarnacion expected to miss at least a month of action. Injuries limited the veteran Flores to 71 games last season, where he slashed .206/.277/.318 with four homers and 25 RBI.

Making spring debut Flores (knee) is starting at first base and batting fifth for Sunday's Cactus League game against the Reds, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact The 33-year-old was limited to 71 games and finished last season on the injured list due to a knee injury that necessitated surgery, but he's ready to go for the start of spring training. Flores exercised his $3.5 million player option for 2025 in November and is expected to fill the small side of a platoon at first base with LaMonte Wade.

NOVEMBER 23, 2024 • Associated Press
Sticking with Giants Flores (knee) exercised his $3.5 million player option for 2025 on Saturday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
Impact Flores slashed just .206/.277/.318 with 26 RBI across 242 plate appearances in 2024 before suffering a season-ending knee injury in late July. Given his poor performance and injured knee, he was unlikely to receive more than $3.5 million on the open market, making it easy to see why he chose to opt in for 2025. It's unknown if he'll be ready for the start of spring training.

Shifts to 60-day IL The Giants transferred Flores (knee) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Friday.
Impact The transaction was a procedural move, as Flores had already been ruled out for the season after undergoing a procedure on his right knee earlier this month. The Giants activated Ethan Small (oblique) from the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move and optioned him to Triple-A Sacramento. The 33-year-old Flores slashed .206/.277/.318 with four home runs, 26 RBI and 19 runs over 242 plate appearances before being shut down for the season.

Out for season Flores (knee) has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2024 season, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Flores underwent a Tenex procedure on his right knee Tuesday and the Giants ruled the infielder out for the remainder of 2024 following the surgery. The 32-year-old's 12th MLB season comes to and end with 71 games played, totaling four homers, 19 runs and 26 RBI in 242 plate appearances. Mark Canha is slated to platoon with LaMonte Wade at first base in the closing two months of the regular season.
AUGUST 6, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Knee procedure on tap Flores will travel to Los Angeles and is scheduled to undergo a Tenex procedure on his right knee Tuesday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.
Impact The Giants are unlikely to provide a recovery timeline for Flores until the procedure is completed, but the veteran first baseman will likely be shut down from baseball activities for several weeks and could face an uphill battle to make it back from the injured list before the end of the season. Before he was deactivated July 25 with what the Giants had termed as right knee tendinitis, Flores operated largely in the short side of a platoon at first base and slashed .206/.277/.318 with four home runs and 26 RBI over 242 plate appearances. Trade-deadline pickup Mark Canha now looks to be the preferred platoon mate at first base with LaMonte Wade.

Headed back to IL The Giants placed Flores on the 10-day injured list Thursday with right knee tendinitis, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact Flores just returned from the same injury a little over two weeks ago, but it appears he might not have ever totally recovered from the issue. He'll be eligible for activation in early August, but the Giants might take things slower this time in hopes that Flores can get over the hump with the injury.

Back from injured list The Giants reinstated Flores (knee) from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
Impact Flores landed on the injured list June 28 due to right knee tendinitis, and he's been given the green light to return to the active after slightly more than a minimum-length stay on the IL. The 32-year-old has slashed just .206/.282/.317 with 25 RBI in 227 plate appearances, though he'll presumably continue to split reps at first base with LaMonte Wade.

Sitting down Sunday Flores isn't in the Giants' lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Flores will sit for a second consecutive game Sunday after going 2-for-15 with a double and an RBI over his last five contests. Trenton Brooks will instead start at first base and bat eighth during the series finale.

Heading to bench Wednesday Flores is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs.
Impact Flores has now hit the bench in two straight matchups with right-handed pitchers, though it's not yet clear if he's moved back into a pure platoon role at first base with the lefty-hitting Trenton Brooks, who gets the start Wednesday but is hitting .143 over 21 at-bats since getting called up from Triple-A Sacramento. Flores, meanwhile, is hitting .212 on the season, and he owns a .198/.291/.287 slash line over 117 plate appearances against righties.
JUNE 19, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Taking seat Monday Flores is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cubs.
Impact Flores had started at first base in each of the Giants' last five games, with three starts coming versus lefties and two coming versus right-handers. Though the Giants seem content to deploy Flores as their primary first baseman rather than a platoon bat while LaMonte Wade (hamstring) is on the injured list, Flores will nonetheless give way to rookie Trenton Brooks on Monday.

Drives in five in win Flores went 2-for-4 with a walk, a home run and five RBI in Wednesday's 9-3 win over the Diamondbacks.
Impact The Giants launched three homers on the day, but Flores' grand slam off Jordan Montgomery in the third inning proved to be the biggest blow. Flores snapped a 21-game homer drought with the blast, but that May 4 shot was his only other homer on the season. The 32-year-old's five RBI on Wednesday equaled his total from his prior 26 games combined.
