Optioned to Norfolk
The Orioles optioned Wells to Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday.
Impact
Wells owns a 3.44 ERA and 1.20 WHIP through 18.1 innings this season, but the O's will send him to the minors to help make room on the active roster for Dietrich Enns' (foot) return from the injured list and Nick Raquet's promotion from Triple-A. Wells will likely be welcomed back to Baltimore's bullpen once the team needs a fresh arm.

Pitches in loss
Wells struck out the only batter he faced Thursday in the 4-2 loss to the Guardians.
Impact
Wells missed the majority of 2024 and almost the entirety of the 2025 season due to an elbow injury, only starting the final four games in September of last year. Given the 31-year-old excelled in those four starts to the tune of a 2.91 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 18:2 K:BB across 21.2 innings, the expectation was that Wells would be a part of the team's rotation to kick off 2026. So far, the right-hander has exclusively been used as a middle-relief option having pitched in 11 innings thus far through nine games with middling success (4.91 ERA).

Slated for bullpen role
Orioles manager Craig Albernaz confirmed Wednesday that Wells will be used as a reliever at the beginning of the season, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
Impact
President of baseball operations Mike Elias said as camp opened that Wells would be built up as a starting pitcher, but since then the club tipped its hand in regards to Wells' role by using the righty in one-inning stints. Wells has looked sharp in Grapefruit League action, yielding just one hit with a 5:0 K:BB over three scoreless frames. He could be ticketed for a high-leverage bullpen role from the right side while Andrew Kittredge (shoulder) is out.

Gearing up for starting role
Orioles president of baseball operations Mike Elias said Wednesday that Wells will be built up a starter during spring training, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
Impact
According to Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun, Elias said that the Orioles haven't made a firm determination whether Wells will handle a starting or relief role over the long haul, but at least for the early part of camp, the 31-year-old righty will get a chance to compete for an Opening Day rotation spot. After completing his recovery from a June 2024 UCL revision and internal brace augmentation procedure on his right elbow, Wells was activated from the injured list last September and pitched well over the final month of the season, logging a 2.91 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 18:2 K:BB in 21.2 innings over his four starts.

Nets $2.45 million for 2026
Wells agreed to a one-year, $2.45 million contract with the Orioles on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
Impact
The right-hander made his season debut for the Orioles late in 2025 after recovering from Tommy John surgery, and the injury limited his earning potential while heading into his third year of arbitration eligibility. Wells posted a 2.91 ERA over four starts in September and had a 3.64 ERA across 118.2 innings during his last full season in 2023. He's expected to enter spring training as a starter but isn't guaranteed to crack the rotation with the Orioles trading for Shane Baz and signing Zach Eflin (back) this winter. Even if Wells does earn a starting spot, he'll likely have some workload limitations in 2026 while coming off two mostly lost seasons.

Expected to be in 2026 rotation
Orioles president of baseball operations Mike Elias said Monday that the team plans for Wells to be a starting pitcher next season, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact
It's possible Wells opens next season in the bullpen if the Orioles make multiple high-impact starting pitcher acquisitions this offseason, but the righty set himself up well to be a member of the 2026 rotation after collecting a 2.91 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 18:2 K:BB over 21.2 innings in four September starts following a return from UCL revision surgery. Because he's totaled just 62.1 frames over the last two seasons, Wells' workload will be monitored closely in 2026.

Falls to Rays
Wells (2-1) took the loss Wednesday against Tampa Bay, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk across four innings. He struck out four.
Impact
It was a tough outing for Wells, who gave up a run in each of the first three innings. Prior to Wednesday, the 31-year-old right-hander had not allowed more than two runs in any of his three starts. Wells, who missed all but the final month of the season while recovering from UCL revision surgery, will likely finish the campaign with a 2.91 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 18 strikeouts across 21.2 innings.
