Headed for IL
The Tigers are placing Madden on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Saturday) due to a bruised right forearm.
Impact
Madden was injured Friday when he was hit by a comebacker. Subsequent X-rays were negative, but the right-hander is nonetheless going to need to take some time off while on the IL. Reliever Will Vest (forearm) has been activated from the injured list in a corresponding roster move, though it's unclear who will take Madden's spot in the rotation.

X-rays negative
X-rays on Madden's right forearm came back negative following his removal from Friday's game against Toronto, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Impact
Madden took a 107.9-mph line drive off his forearm in the third inning of Friday's contest and was taken out of the game immediately afterward. Initial imaging suggests he escaped the incident without a fracture, but the Tigers are going to run additional tests on him as a precaution. He's tentatively lined up to start Wednesday's game against the Guardians, though that could change depending on how he feels and what the results of his tests say.

Hit by comebacker, leaves game
Madden was removed from Friday's game against the Blue Jays after getting hit on the arm by a line drive, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Impact
Madden was immediately replaced on the mound after he took a 107.9-mph missile off his arm in the third inning of Friday's contest. The severity of his injury remains unknown, but he'll presumably head in for imaging to determine whether he suffered a fracture.

Following opener again
Madden will be the Tigers' primary pitcher Friday versus the Blue Jays after Brenan Hanifee serves as an opener, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Impact
Madden was initially listed as a traditional starting pitcher, but the Tigers have decided to use him in a bulk-relief role again after it worked well the last two times. The righty has permitted three runs with a 12:2 K:BB over 11 innings in his first two appearances for Detroit this season.

Drawing start Friday
Madden will be the starting pitcher for Friday's game versus the Blue Jays, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Impact
Madden has been terrific in two bulk relief outings, allowing three runs with a 12:2 K:BB over 11 frames. The top of Toronto's lineup is right-handed heavy, so the right-handed Madden will work as a traditional starter Friday. Madden threw 87 pitches his last time out and will be operating on five days' rest, so he'll be available for a full workload.

Covers six frames in bulk relief
Madden allowed three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out five batters over six relief innings in a no-decision versus Kansas City on Saturday.
Impact
Detroit opted to go with an opener Saturday, so Madden didn't enter until the third frame. That saved him from being tagged with a loss, though it also prevented him from notching a quality start, which he would have otherwise earned with three runs allowed across six innings. Madden covered a starter's workload, tossing 87 pitches, 53 of which were strikes. The right-hander was worked in bulk relief in each of his two outings so far this season and has fared well, as he tossed five scoreless frames with seven punchouts in his previous appearance May 4 versus Boston. Given that success, the Tigers may opt to keep deploying Madden behind an opener, but regardless he seems likely to remain up with the big club and handling starter's innings since the Tigers' rotation is currently dealing with multiple injuries.

Set for bulk-relief outing
Madden is slated to pitch in bulk relief behind opening pitcher Burch Smith in Saturday's game against the Royals, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The Tigers initially listed Madden as their starting pitcher for Saturday's contest, but he'll instead work as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen after he fared well in that capacity earlier in the week. After being summoned from Triple-A Toledo on Monday, Madden worked behind Tyler Holton later that night against the Red Sox and struck out seven over five scoreless innings of relief in his 2026 MLB debut. Detroit will soon get reinforcement to its pitching staff with Framber Valdez (suspension) due back Wednesday, but Madden should be able to hold down a spot in the rotation until the Tigers get at least two of Tarik Skubal (elbow), Casey Mize (adductor), Justin Verlander (hip) and Troy Melton (elbow) back from the injured list.

Drawing start Saturday
Madden will be the Tigers' starting pitcher for Saturday's game in Kansas City, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Madden earned a traditional start after excelling in bulk relief in his season debut for the Tigers on Monday versus the Red Sox, striking out seven over five scoreless frames. The right-hander threw 81 pitches in that outing and has been a starting pitcher this year during his time at Triple-A Toledo, so there shouldn't be any workload limitations in place Saturday.

Fires five scoreless in return
Madden did not factor into the decision Monday against the Red Sox, allowing four hits while striking out seven over five scoreless innings.
Impact
Making his first MLB appearance since 2024, Madden delivered an impressive return after being recalled from Triple-A Toledo Monday morning. The right-hander entered after Tyler Holton opened the game with a clean first inning and quickly settled in, attacking the zone and throwing 50 of his 81 pitches for strikes and punching out seven. The outing was especially encouraging for Detroit, who are dealing with the loss of Tarik Skubal, as Madden stepped in and provided a performance reminiscent of an ace. After missing all of 2025 with a shoulder strain, the 26-year-old showed no signs of rust and could be in line for a continued role moving forward.

Recalled from Triple-A
The Tigers recalled Madden from Triple-A Toledo on Monday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Impact
In his first 21 innings with Toledo this season, Madden holds a 4.71 ERA and 21:12 K:BB. The Tigers are going with a bullpen game Monday against the Red Sox, and Madden is a candidate to enter as a bulk reliever following opener Tyler Holton. Madden posted a 4.30 ERA over six appearances (one start) for Detroit in 2024 before missing all of 2025 with a shoulder strain.

Solid so far this spring
Madden allowed a run on two hits across 3.2 innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League contest against the Red Sox. He walked three and struck out two.
Impact
The three walks were a bit worrisome, but Madden otherwise held his own against a Boston lineup featuring a number of regular starters. The righty has allowed just the one run across 5.2 innings this spring. Madden, who missed the entire 2025 season while recovering from a right rotator cuff strain, has already been optioned to Triple-A Toledo, and the team will likely want to see him get some innings under his belt there to shake off rust. However, Madden could be an option for an MLB promotion at some point down the road if he looks good in the minors.

Demoted to minors
The Tigers optioned Madden to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Impact
Madden reached the big leagues for the first time in 2024 and submitted a 4.30 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 17:8 K:BB in 23 innings, but the 25-year-old righty had his entire 2025 campaign wiped out while he recovered from a right rotator cuff strain. Though he's back to full health for spring training, Madden will need to shake off some rust and pitch effectively out of the Toledo rotation at the start of the upcoming season before getting consideration for a starting role with the big club.

Expected to be ready for camp
Madden (shoulder), who missed all of the 2025 season, is expected to be ready for spring training, MLB.com reports.
Impact
Madden sustained a right rotator cuff strain last spring and ended up missing the entire season as a result. After a long recovery period, the 25-year-old righty appears to be ready to take the mound again. As a rookie in 2024, Madden appeared in six games for the Tigers, posting a 4.30 ERA across 23 innings. He figures to compete for a bullpen role during camp.
