Sent down Sunday Cheng was optioned to Triple-A Worcester after Sunday's 6-1 win over the Blue Jays, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Impact Cheng will head down to Triple-A to make room for Curtis Mead's activation ahead of Mead's debut with Boston on Monday. Cheng posted a .256 average with a double, five RBI and seven runs scored over 39 at-bats in 14 contests with the Red Sox following his promotion June 26, and he will likely get another shot with the big-league club relatively soon.

Impact Though he had typically occupied the strong side of a platoon at shortstop with Andruw Monasterio at shortstop since being called up from Triple-A Worcester on June 26, Cheng finds himself on the bench for a third straight matchup versus a right-hander (Kevin Gausman). Monasterio appears to have at least temporarily settled into a near-everyday role at the expense of Cheng, who has produced a lowly .256/.318/.282 slash line through his first 44 plate appearances with Boston.
