Will cede starts to Turner
Casas will share first base with the right-handed hitting Justin Turner, but it will not be a strict platoon, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. "We'll protect Triston from...
Impact
Cora also noted last season's ankle injury that forced Casas to miss more than two months of development time as a factor in giving the prospect some days off. Casas would have struggle to mightily -- like Bobby Dalbec did in 2022 -- to be dislodged from the position. Turner hasn't played first base since 2015 and has just 25 starts (14 complete games) worth of experience at the position. Turner's primary role will be the designated hitter.

In line for first base job
Casas (knee) is poised to be the Red Sox' regular first baseman after Eric Hosmer was designated for assignment Friday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Impact
There's a good chance Casas was ultimately going to be the preferred option over Hosmer anyway, but with the veteran gone the situation is that much clearer. Casas flashed his upside in a short stint with Boston in 2022, hitting just .197 but collecting 19 walks and five home runs over 95 plate appearances. The youngster injured his knee in October during winter ball but should be 100 percent for spring training.

Won't return to winter ball
Casas' knee injury will prevent him from returning to play for Tigres del Licey in the Dominican winter league, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Impact
Casas had only played three games for the Tigres before developing knee soreness in mid-October. The Red Sox are reportedly unconcerned about long-term issues but didn't want him risking anything in winter ball. He was down in the Dominican to make up for lost development time after missing nearly two months with a high ankle sprain. Casas is expected to head into 2023 as the Red Sox's primary first baseman or designated hitter without the benefit of those extra at-batas.

Managing sore knee
Casas is dealing with knee soreness but could be back in the lineup for Tigres del Licey in the Dominican League on Friday.
Impact
The 22-year-old received an MRI which showed no structural damage, so he may be able to retake the field after a couple days of rest. Casas made his big-league debut for Boston this year and had a .197/.358/.408 slash line with five home runs and 12 RBI in 27 games, and any injury is likely to be treated with caution since he's the organization's top prospect.

Three hits including two-run homer
Casas went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run, a walk and three runs scored in Tuesday's 13-9 victory over the Orioles.
Impact
Casas launched a two-run homer off Kyle Bradish in the bottom of the second frame before he walked and came around to score in the following frame. He added two more base knocks while coming around to score again later in the contest. The home run was his fifth of the season and third in his last six games. Over that stretch, Casas has batted .389 with three home runs, six RBI and seven runs. The 22-year-old is now batting .179 with five homers, 10 RBI, 10 runs and a stolen base over his fist 56 career at-bats in 20 games.

Homers in loss
Casas went 1-for-2 with three walks, a home run and three RBI in Saturday's 7-5 loss to the Yankees.
Impact
Casas hit a two-run homer in the second inning then walked with the bases loaded in the sixth to produce a third run. The rookie has shown good defense at first base, but he hasn't hit much. He had just three hits over the first 38 at-bats (.079) in the majors but has hit safely in the first three games of the series against the Yankees, including two home runs. The Red Sox aren't worried and are confident Casas will hit in the majors.

Blasts third homer
Casas went 1-for-4 with one homer, one RBI and one run scored in Thursday's loss to the Yankees.
Impact
Casas led off the seventh inning with a homer off righty reliever Clarke Schmidt to get the Red Sox on the board and cut the deficit to two. The 22-year-old rookie has had a particularly difficult time recently as he was 0-for-14 during his last six games prior to this contest. The first baseman now has three extra-base hits in the majors, all of which are home runs.
