Spring debut likely coming soon Yates is expected to make his Blue Jays debut at some point later this week, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports.
Impact Since Yates is coming off fall surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow, the Blue Jays have been proceeding slowly with the reliever this spring, but he's thus far steered clear of any setbacks in his throwing program. The right-hander has reportedly looked good in his recent bullpen and live batting practice sessions, and he should soon get the opportunity to pitch in the Grapefruit League. Toronto has yet to name a closer, but Yates' solid track record in the ninth inning coupled with his $5.5 million salary make him the favorite for the role.

Impact Greiner was fortunate to avoid any damage to his orbital bone, so he won't require surgery and should make a full recovery by the middle of the month. An absence for any length of time is still less than ideal, however, as Greiner is battling Jake Rogers, Dustin Garneau and Eric Haase for the top backup catcher job behind Wilson Ramos.

Impact The veteran left-hander also walked two batters during his first inning of work, but free passes are part of the package with Ray. He topped out at 98.4 mph with his fastball but found more control when sitting 94-96 mph in the second frame. Ray struggled through a rough 2020, but the Jays are counting on him to rebound after re-signing Ray to a one-year deal in the offseason.
