Gets new opportunity Cosgrove was traded from the Padres to the Cubs on Thursday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Impact Cosgrove was designated for assignment by the Padres on Sunday but will now offer the Cubs bullpen depth. He has pitched primarily in the minors throughout his career, though he has maintained a 3.95 ERA and 1.20 WHIP across 66 big-league frames.

Pushed off 40-man roster The Padres designated Cosgrove for assignment Sunday.

Impact Cosgrove was pushed off the 40-man roster to make room for right-hander Logan Gillaspie, who had his contract selected from Triple-A El Paso prior to Sunday's game against the Cubs. After turning in a 11.66 ERA and 1.98 WHIP over 14.2 innings at the big-league level in 2024, Cosgrove didn't make much of a claim for a spot in the Padres' Opening Day bullpen this spring and struggled over his first four relief outings with El Paso, giving up three earned runs on four hits and four walks over 3.2 innings.

Optioned to Triple-A The Padres optioned Cosgrove to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday.

Impact Cosgrove never quite got his feet underneath him in the majors last season, turning in an 11.66 ERA and 1.98 WHIP across 14.2 regular-season innings. His struggles followed him into spring training, where he allowed seven runs in just 5.1 frames, so the Friars will keep him in the minor leagues for now.

Back in majors The Padres recalled Cosgrove from Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.

Impact Cosgrove has allowed 19 earned runs over just 14.2 innings in the majors this season, but he'll return to San Diego nonetheless to give the Friars a left-handed bullpen arm while fellow southpaw Martin Perez is on paternity leave. The 28-year-old Cosgrove will almost certainly be limited to low-leverage situations while in the big leagues.

Snags extra-inning save Cosgrove pitched a perfect 10th inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Giants.

Impact Regular closer Josh Hader was deployed in the ninth inning to keep the game tied, and he did the job just fine. Cosgrove then worked the 10th, retiring the side on 13 pitches (nine strikes). This was his first big-league save in 52 appearances as a rookie this season -- he's also added six holds and a 1-2 record while mostly seeing lower-leverage work. Cosgrove owns a 1.81 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 43:17 K:BB over 49.2 innings overall.

Strikes out two in win Cosgrove allowed one run on one hit with two strikeouts across one inning in Wednesday's 6-1 win over the Dodgers.

Impact Cosgrove spoiled the shutout by serving up a solo shot to Kolten Wong to lead off the ninth inning, but managed to work through the next three batters to finish out the game. The southpaw has been a steady member of the bullpen in September, pitching to a 1.50 ERA and 0.33 WHIP across six innings with seven strikeouts.

Impact Cosgrove returns to action after spending the minimum 15 days on the injured list while dealing with a left hamstring strain. The southpaw has pitched well for the Padres this season, posting a minuscule 0.53 ERA and 0.53 WHIP along with a 15:2 K:BB over 17 innings. He hasn't seen much work in high-leverage spots, though, and has yet to record a hold or a save.
