Angels' Tim Anderson willing to do what it takes in new start Having overcome off-field issues that affected his play, the former All-Star shortstop, in camp on a minor-league contract, is committed to...

Making start in center field Anderson is starting in center field and batting seventh in Wednesday's Cactus League game versus the Dodgers, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Impact Anderson has never played an inning in the outfield in pro ball but is attempting to add to his versatility this spring in an effort to make the Angels' Opening Day roster. The two-time All-Star is also competing for reps at shortstop and second base.

Will get some reps in outfield Angels manager Ron Washington said Monday that Anderson will see some action in the outfield later this spring, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports.

Impact Anderson's main focus will be competing for time at shortstop, where the Angels will likely need a fill-in for the injured Zach Neto (shoulder) for a bit. However, it appears the 31-year-old will also attempt to add to his versatility with some reps in the outfield. Anderson started two games at second base for the White Sox in 2023, which is the only time he's ever played a position other than shortstop.

Chance to be Opening Day shortstop Anderson will compete to be the Angels' Opening Day shortstop while Zach Neto (shoulder) is sidelined, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Impact It's not yet clear how much time Neto might miss, but a stint on the injured list to begin the season is expected. Anderson was inked to a minor-league contract in January and will compete with Kevin Newman, Scott Kingery and Kyren Paris to be the placeholder at shortstop. While Anderson is the only one of the four competitors not on a major-league deal, Bollinger has projected him to win the shortstop gig. That said, given Anderson's woeful .235/.271/.274 batting line over the last two seasons, he will have much to prove this spring before he's handed a roster spot.

Two-time All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson agrees to a minor league contract with Los Angeles Angels

Two-time All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson has agreed to a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Angels and will report to big league spring training

FEBRUARY 5, 2025 • Associated Press

Added by Halos on MiLB deal The Angels signed Anderson to a minor-league contract Wednesday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

Impact While Nightengale doesn't denote it, Anderson surely received an invitation to spring training, where he'll attempt to win a spot on the Angels' Opening Day roster. Anderson was released by the Marlins last July after managing just a .214/.237/.226 batting line in 65 games. The former batting champ is just 31 but has slashed only .235/.271/.274 with one home run across 188 contests since the start of the 2023 season. With Zach Neto (shoulder) a question mark for Opening Day, the Angels could be looking for someone to fill in at shortstop for a while. However, whether Anderson has anything left is very much in question.

Former batting champ Tim Anderson designated for assignment by Marlins

Marlins Designate Former All-Star Shortstop Tim Anderson for Assignment The Miami Marlins on Tuesday designated shortstop Tim Anderson, a two-time MLB All-Star, for assignment.

JULY 2, 2024 • CHARLOTTEOBSERVER.COM

Designated for assignment The Marlins designated Anderson for assignment Tuesday, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.

Impact Miami giving Anderson a modest one-year, $5 million contract in hopes that he could have a bounce-back season seemed like a no-brainer. The rebound didn't come, as Anderson slashed a hideous .214/.237/.226 with no home runs and a 68:7 K:BB over 65 games. He will clear waivers and eventually be released, at which point another club could take a chance on him at the prorated veteran minimum salary. It's no given that Anderson will receive that opportunity, however, considering his .544 OPS since the start of the 2023 campaign. Vidal Brujan could get a shot at shortstop for the Marlins with Anderson out of the picture, with Xavier Edwards also potentially in the mix.

Getting Sunday off Anderson isn't in the Marlins' lineup for Sunday's game versus Seattle.

Impact After going 0-for-3 on Saturday to end his brief five-game hitting streak, Anderson will get a breather during Sunday's series finale. Vidal Brujan will fill the opening at shortstop and bat eighth.

Sitting out Wednesday Anderson is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's contest in San Diego.

Impact Anderson is just 5-for-24 in seven games since returning from the injured list, dragging his season line down to an unsightly .199/.235/.219. Vidal Brujan is at shortstop Wednesday and it wouldn't be a surprise if he begins to see more action at the position if Anderson's struggles continue.
