Starling Marte - MLB News, Rumors, & Updates

Becomes free agent The Royals released Marte on Wednesday.

Impact He's now officially a free agent after passing through waivers. Marte slashed just .242/.298/.314 with two home runs and two stolen bases in 59 games for the Royals. Should the 37-year-old want to continue his career, he might have to accept a minor-league contract.

Removed from 40-man roster The Royals designated Marte for assignment Monday.

Impact Marte wound up being a casualty of the Royals' roster crunch, as the team needed to clear two spots after infielders Vinnie Pasquantino (wrist) and Maikel Garcia (hand) were reinstated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Monday's series opener versus the Athletics. Though the right-handed-hitting Marte received 75 percent of his plate appearances against left-handed pitching, he slashed just .242/.298/.314 with two home runs and two stolen bases in 59 games. Given the 37-year-old's lackluster offensive production along with his limited utility on defense at this stage of his career, he could end up going unclaimed off waivers.

Back on bench vs. righty Marte is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies.

Impact Marte will retreat to the bench after he served as the Royals' designated hitter in each of the last three games while going a collective 2-for-9 at the plate. All three of those starts came against left-handed pitching, and Marte appears unlikely to break out of a short-side platoon role anytime soon. He's logged 116 plate appearances on the season, with 88 coming against lefties.

Logs three hits in win Marte went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in Thursday's 14-6 win over St. Louis.

Impact With left-hander Matthew Liberatore getting the start for St. Louis, Marte was in the lineup in right field and made the most of the opportunity, logging his second three-hit effort of the campaign. It was highlighted by an RBI double down the right-field line to cap off a six-run second inning for Kansas City. Across 91 plate appearances this season, the veteran outfielder is hitting .277/.330/.361 with a homer, four doubles, six RBI and eight runs scored.

Pops first homer in win Marte went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run in Sunday's 6-5 win over the Twins.

Impact Drawing the start at designated hitter versus southpaw Connor Prielipp, Marte lifted his first homer of the campaign Sunday. The left-handed-hitting Carter Jensen should continue to serve as Kansas City's primary DH, but Marte could see an uptick in at-bats in right field until Jac Caglianone (shoulder) returns to action. Even so, Marte is slashing a pedestrian .258/.315/.348 with four extra-base hits, five RBI, five runs scored and no stolen bases over 73 plate appearances.

Trio of hits Thursday Marte went 3-for-4 with an RBI and was caught stealing in Thursday's 6-3 loss against the Athletics.

Impact With left-hander Jeffrey Springs (hip) starting for the Athletics, Marte was inserted into Thursday's lineup and came through with his first multi-hit effort of the season. The veteran opened the scoring in the first inning with an opposite-field single to plate Maikel Garcia. Marte has handled a limited role as a platoon option for the Royals but has produced when called upon, as evidenced by a .303 batting average, though the 37-year-old has yet to draw a walk or show much power across 35 plate appearances.

Handling limited platoon role Marte will start in right field and bat sixth in Sunday's game against the Yankees.

Impact Marte will crack the Royals' starting nine for just the sixth time in the team's first 22 games of the season. All but one of those starts have come against left-handed pitching, so the Royals seemingly view the 37-year-old primarily as a platoon option in the outfield.

Signs with Royals Marte signed a contract with the Royals on Saturday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.

Impact Marte is coming off his most efficient season in three years, as he finished 2025 with a .270/.335/.410 slash line to go with nine homers, 34 RBI, 37 runs scored and seven steals in 329 plate appearances. That being said, the 37-year-old outfielder hasn't appeared in more than 100 games since 2022, and he likely isn't slated for a full-time role in Kansas City either. Instead, he'll presumably work in tandem with Jac Caglianone in right field and Carter Jensen at DH, filling in for one of the two against left-handed starters.

Not in lineup versus lefty Marte is absent from the lineup for Thursday's contest against the Cubs.

Impact Marte nearly always plays versus lefties but will begin this one on the bench as southpaw Shota Imanaga toes the rubber for the Cubs. Mark Vientos will start at designated hitter and Brett Baty will play third base for the Mets.
