Sidelined with forearm tightness
Tampa Bay placed McClanahan on the 15-day injured list Friday with left forearm tightness.
Impact
McClanahan will make his second stint on the IL in the last three months after Thursday's rocky outing against Texas. The left-hander lasted just five innings, allowing four earned runs, his most given up since July 19. In his first season since 2023, McClanahan owns a 10-7 record, 3.36 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 106:39 K:BB over 118 innings. With the 29-year-old on the shelf, the Rays recalled Alex Cook from Triple-A Durham to replace McClanahan on the active roster.

Yields four runs in defeat
McClanahan (10-7) took the loss against Texas on Thursday, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three batters over five innings.
Impact
McClanahan was strong to begin the game, starting with three scoreless frames. However, the southpaw gave up four runs across his final two innings, with the big blow being a Corey Seager two-run homer. McClanahan continued to fall short of six frames -- he's yet to reach that mark over seven starts since the All-Star break. He's fallen off a bit in the second half with a 4.78 ERA across 32 innings, though he's posted a fine 24:11 K:BB and 1.09 WHIP during that span.

Earns 10th win
McClanahan (10-6) earned the win against the Padres on Friday, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 5.2 innings.
Impact
McClanahan opened with four scoreless frames before losing steam, departing an out shy of a quality start after allowing a homer in the sixth. It was the first time the 29-year-old reached 80 pitches in three outings since returning from the injured list Aug. 17, a stretch in which he's yielded six earned runs with a 12:3 K:BB. He'll take a 3.19 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 103:38 K:BB across 113 innings into a home matchup with the Mets next week.

Throws five scoreless Saturday
McClanahan did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Orioles, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out five over five scoreless innings.
Impact
McClanahan was efficient, generating 10 swinging strikes on 74 pitches and departing in line for a potential win the Rays' bullpen couldn't secure. It was a strong rebound for the southpaw, who struggled through a 57-pitch outing in his return from the injured list Monday. He'll carry a 3.10 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 99:36 K:BB across 107.1 innings this season into a home matchup with the Padres next weekend.

Rusty in return Monday
McClanahan took a no-decision against the Orioles on Monday, allowing three runs on four hits and no walks in 3.1 innings. He struck out three.
Impact
Making his return from the injured list, McClanahan showed signs of rust on the major-league mound following a one-start rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham. The Rays appeared to have a strict workload limit in place for the left-hander, who threw only 57 pitches (35 strikes), but he should see those restrictions loosen as he becomes further removed from his bout of left mid-back tightness. McClanahan is set to take a 3.25 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 94:35 K:BB over 102.1 innings into a road rematch with Baltimore.

Reinstated ahead of Monday's start
The Rays activated McClanahan (back) from the 15-day injured list Monday.
Impact
McClanahan is slated to rejoin the Rays' rotation Monday with a start against the Orioles after being shelved for almost three weeks with mid-back tightness. The left-hander fanned two batters over three perfect innings in his lone rehab start with Triple-A Durham on Aug. 11. McClahahan threw just 30 pitches in that outing and has not reached 50 pitches in a start since July 24, so his workload Monday will be somewhat abbreviated.

Making return from IL on Monday
McClanahan (back) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Monday's series finale versus the Orioles at Tropicana Field, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact
McClanahan has received the green light to rejoin the Tampa Bay rotation after he struck out two batters over three perfect innings during his lone rehab start Tuesday with Triple-A Durham. Considering that McClanahan tossed just 30 pitches in that outing, he'll likely be in line for a restricted workload Monday, when he'll be making his first start for the Rays since July 30 before hitting the shelf with left mid-back tightness.

Perfect in rehab start
McClanahan (back) threw three perfect innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Durham on Tuesday. He struck out two.
Impact
After tossing two innings in a simulated game Thursday, McClanahan was flawless Tuesday in the next step of his recovery. The left-hander threw 30 pitches in the outing and averaged 95.7 mph with his fastball, which is right on par with his season average. McClanahan is working his way back from left mid-back tightness, and it's possible his next appearance will come in the major leagues.
