Goes on 60-day IL
The Nationals recalled Romero from Triple-A Rochester and placed him on the 60-day injured list Thursday due to a left calf strain.
Impact
The calf injury is the latest in a growing list of on- and off-field setbacks for Romero, a 2017 first-round pick who has covered just 85.2 innings through his first five professional seasons. Before he was demoted to minor-league camp, Romero hadn't made any Grapefruit League appearances while dealing with back soreness, but it's a different issue that will keep him off the field for the first two months of the 2022 campaign. Once healthy, Romero is expected to head out on an extended rehab assignment, and he'll likely be optioned to Rochester whenever the Nationals choose to activate him from the 60-day IL.

Demoted to Triple-A
The Nationals optioned Romero (back) to Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact
Romero didn't pitch for the big club in 2021 and had yet to appear for the Nationals during the Grapefruit League while he contended with back soreness, so his demotion doesn't come as a surprise. Assuming the back issue proves to be a short-term concern, Romero should be ready to go for the start of the Triple-A season in early April.

Shut down with stiff back
Manager Dave Martinez said Wednesday that Romero has been shut down due to a stiff back, Matt Weyrich of NBC Sports Washington reports.
Impact
Romero threw at spring training Monday but has been experiencing soreness since then. As a result, he'll have some time to rest to prevent a more serious injury. It's not yet clear how much time the left-hander is expected to be sidelined or whether the shutdown will impact his availability for the start of the regular season. Romero missed the start of the 2021 campaign with a rib injury and pitched exclusively in the minors after returning to game action.

Romero was placed on the temporary inactive list Monday, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
Impact
Dougherty goes on to explain that Romero was basically placed on the paternity list to be with his family for the birth of his child. He figures to be away from the team for at least a few days.

Climbs to Triple-A
The Nationals promoted Romero from Double-A Harrisburg to Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, Grant Paulsen of 106-7 The Fan Washington reports.
Impact
Romero appeared in three games at the big-league level in 2020, but that was largely a byproduct of the Nationals wanting a power arm out of the bullpen while the team still had visions of contending for the playoffs last season. With minor-league baseball returning to action in 2021, the Nationals shifted their focus back to developing Romero as a starter, but he didn't make his debut in the minors until July 1 while he recovered from a rib injury suffered in spring training. Upon completing a rehab assignment, Romero eventually settled at Harrisburg, where he submitted a 5.31 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 20.1 innings over six outings. While Romero's surface numbers were ugly, his outstanding peripherals (2.75 FIP, 27.2 K-BB%, 0.89 HR/9) were justification for the Nationals to bump the 25-year-old up to Rochester.

Reinstated from IL
Triple-A Rochester reinstated Romero (ribs) from its 7-day injured list July 20 and assigned him to Double-A Harrisburg. He's made one appearance for Harrisburg since being activat...
Impact
Romero was out of commission for the first two months of the minor-league season due to a stress fracture in his rib before he was cleared to begin a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Florida Complex League earlier this month. He made one appearance in the FCL, then picked up three starts for Low-A Fredericksburg before moving on to Double-A. Romero could slot into the Triple-A rotation by season's end once he gets a chance to build up his pitch count at Harrisburg.

Rehab progresses to Double-A
Romero (ribs) will make a rehab start for Double-A Fredericksburg on Tuesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact
Romero made his first rehab start in the Gulf Coast League on July 1, and he allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two in 1.2 innings. He's been shut down since April due to a stress fracture in his rib, but he'll take another step in his recovery Tuesday. Once he's fully healthy, the southpaw will likely join the rotation at Triple-A Rochester.

Progressing in throwing program
Romero (rib) recently resumed a throwing at the Nationals' extended spring training facility in Florida, Matt Weyrich of NBC Sports Washington reports.
Impact
Romero had been shut down since April after suffering a stress fracture in his rib while working out at the Nationals' alternate site. The lefty will likely have several hurdles to clear in his recovery program until he's ready to head out on a rehab assignment, which will likely begin in the lower levels of the minors. Once he's fully built up his pitch count, Romero should slot into the rotation at Triple-A Rochester.

Could begin throwing next week
Romero (ribs) might begin a throwing progression next week, Maria Torres of The Athletic reports.
Impact
The southpaw has been shut down since early April after suffering a stress fracture in his rib while pitching at the team's alternate site. Romero will need time to work his way back into shape and might not see minor-league action until June, but he could provide the big-league staff with some depth in the second half.

Shut down with rib injury
Romero is dealing with a rib injury and is unable to throw, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
Impact
Romero suffered the injury while throwing a pitch last week. It's unclear exactly when he'll get back on the mound, but manager Dave Martinez said Tuesday that the lefty will be "out for a while," so he's unlikely to help the big-league roster any time soon.

Optioned to minors
Romero was optioned to Triple-A Rochester on Sunday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact
The 24-year-old didn't appear in any official Grapefruit League games and was unable to secure a spot on the Opening Day roster. Romero made his big-league debut for the Nationals with three appearances in 2020 and allowed four runs on five hits with a 5:3 K:BB over 2.2 innings.

Ready for spring training
Romero (hand) resumed playing catch and throwing bullpen sessions during the Nationals' fall instructional league in October, Byron Kerr of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact
The 2017 first-round pick made his big-league debut out of the Washington bullpen in 2020, making three appearances before he was shut down with a fractured right (non-throwing) hand that required surgery. After spending most of September rehabbing, Romero's return to mound work -- which included catching throws that were returned from his catcher -- suggests that he'll enter spring training at full health. The Nationals reinstated him from the 45-day injured list earlier this month, allowing Romero to reclaim a spot on the 40-man roster.

Breaks non-pitching hand
Romero was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday with a broken right (non-pitching) hand, Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic reports.
Impact
He apparently slipped on the stairs Saturday night, and used his hand to break his fall. Ben Braymer, another lefty, will take Romero's place in the bullpen.

Staying in bullpen for now
Romero is expected to remain in the bullpen, even when the Nationals need extra starters to cover doubleheaders, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The Nats play their first doubleheader of the year Saturday, but the organization doesn't want to push the young southpaw too hard given his long layoff after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2018. "I would say if he didn't have Tommy John surgery and he was stretched out, yeah, I'd like to see him get the start," manager Dave Martinez said Wednesday. "But because we're trying to limit his innings, I think he's going to be fine and do well as a bullpen guy for right now." Romero's nervousness was apparent during a shaky big-league debut last Thursday, but he looked a little better during his second appearance as he gave up one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
